Hi all,
when I boot a newly set up Windows 2008 test server, I get an error like "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" Well, while I don't like this message much I admit that I probably messed up things myself by using imaging software (Ghost) to restore the system partition of the server. Now the miracle: I insert the product DVD into the DVD drive, and press enter. The usual "Press any key to boot from this CD" prompt appears. I do not press a key. After the prompt goes away, Windows 2008 boots and works OK. Questions: * what miracle functionality makes this server "borrow" its boot code from a DVD? * while I don't mind leaving the boot-DVD in the DVD drive I'd prefer the server to boot from the harddrive :-) Any way to fix the boot environment? Under Windows 2003 I usually used fixboot and fixmbr to fix problems like these, but I could not find the repair console in Windows 2008 (yet). Any clues welcome ... Alwin. |

Hello,
With the DVD in the drive, you boot from the DVD, which then passes the boot process to the harddrive. So boot doesn't start from the hard drive so the Boot Code is read differently. Is the partition active for example Use the Windows Server 2008 DVD and choose the repair option there is a bootrec.exe tool with /fixmbr and /fixboot switches listed in this article 934540 Windows Vista no longer starts, and Startup Repair does not fix problem http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;934540 Thanks, Darrell Gorter[MSFT] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights -------------------- | >From: MyMail972 <MyMail972@web.de> | >Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.server.setup | >Subject: Windows 2008 Boot Miracle: DVD Required! | >Date: Thu, 02 Oct 2008 00:28:07 +0200 | >Organization: T-Online | >Lines: 28 | >Message-ID: <gc0thi$ieg$03$1@news.t-online.com> | >Reply-To: MyMail972@web.de | >Mime-Version: 1.0 | >Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed | >Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit | >X-Trace: news.t-online.com 1222900082 03 n18896 i8qGlDDvvVrmb06 081001 22:28:02 | >X-Complaints-To: usenet-abuse@t-online.de | >X-ID: buct60ZbwebC-g8eqEWn7wQPOYVL2a+haA9FRtR-As+IZN-ywKlNrY | >User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 (Windows/20080914) | >Path: TK2MSFTNGHUB02.phx.gbl!TK2MSFTNGP01.phx.gbl!TK2MSF TFEEDS02.phx.gbl!newsfeed0 0.sul.t-online.de!newsfeed01.sul.t-online.de!newsmm00.sul.t-online.de!t-onli ne.de!news.t-online.com!not-for-mail | >Xref: TK2MSFTNGHUB02.phx.gbl microsoft.public.windows.server.setup:5148 | >X-Tomcat-NG: microsoft.public.windows.server.setup | > | >Hi all, | > | >when I boot a newly set up Windows 2008 test server, I get an error like | > | >"DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" | > | >Well, while I don't like this message much I admit that I probably | >messed up things myself by using imaging software (Ghost) to restore the | >system partition of the server. | > | >Now the miracle: I insert the product DVD into the DVD drive, and press | >enter.
