This maybe a silly question, but does Hyper-V Server 2008 (Standalone) emulate hardware or will the guest VMs see the real hardware? Meaning will the OS installed in the VM detect the video, sound, TV Tuners, On-Board RAID and use the native drives for the OS. Or are generic hardware emulated, like in Virtual PC and Virtual Server. Thanks! -- Stargazer_oh |

The vm does not see the physical hardware in the host (apart from the processor). The underlying OS is a cut-down version of Server Core 2008 with Hyper-V. |

It depends on the operating system and the Integration Components being
installed. When IC are installed you are dealing with "real" virtualised syntethic drivers (which are much more performant using the VM Bus). If IC is not available/installed you fallback to the emulated device (Intel NIC, etc) with a performance penalty. The kinds of device that can be virtualised/emulated is limited to: CPU, disk, mem, nics and disks. No USB, no TV tuners Hope this s -- Kurt Roggen [BE] http://trycatch.be/blogs/roggenk "Stargazer_oh" <guest@unknown-email.com> wrote in message news:4dbec56ce76305fe3e2908a3cdf45cce@nntp-gateway.com... > > This maybe a silly question, but does Hyper-V Server 2008 (Standalone) > emulate hardware or will the guest VMs see the real hardware? > > Meaning will the OS installed in the VM detect the video, sound, TV > Tuners, On-Board RAID and use the native drives for the OS. > > Or are generic hardware emulated, like in Virtual PC and Virtual > Server. > > Thanks! > > > -- > Stargazer_oh |
