Hi,
I'm a VM newbie, several of my collegues say that I should use VMware but I thought I;d explore the MS offering first. I've got Virtual Server 2005 R2 Sp1 installed onto Vista Business Edition. Have created a Virtual Machine and now want to install an OS to it. But I can't seem to get it to boot to the OS CD that I have. It's the CD that comes with the MS 79-290 training kit ie the Windows 2K3 120 day eval. It works fine installing on *real* hardware. My problem is that the VM only seems to want to boot to PXE and nothing else. If I remove the network adaptor from the config all I get is: "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device" How do I get it to boot to the OS on my CD drive ( which is actually a DVD drive ) Anyone any ideas ? Jim. |

Are you capturing the cd drive on the cd/dvd drive properties page?

I'm capturing: Attachment = Secondary 0 ( my DVD drive ) Capture = Physical CD/DVD drive - Drive 'D' Some people seem to indicate that you need to press 'Del' when the VM starts up and change the BIOS boot setting ? I can't see any of this as by the time I've logged into the VMRC it's already failed to boot to anything. BTW Virtual PC 2007 works just fine with the same setup, just having problems with Virtual Server 2005.. Must be missing something basic somewhere. I may have a go at installing Virtual Server 2005 onto an XP Pro system instead and see how I get on with that rather than Vista. Meantime if anyone has ideas.. Jim. |

Once you have the cd captured and are back to the vm console view try
resetting the vm. Try it. <jdr.smith@virgin.net> wrote in message news:1590ea56-9099-4008-9ca5-d629f2acf826@a23g2000hsc.googlegroups.com... Is this available from the outset, if so I can't see to get to it quick enough to enter it to change it to boot to CD..if that's in fact what I need to do. That said I'm not that bothered, I'll bet it's quicker to load from ISO images anyway and I've got and msdn subscription. Just loading up a second VM/server, I had to nip out and purchase some more RAM for my Vista PC this afternoon to cope with it all. Now it's working a treat. Does any of this benefit from SuperFetch/ReadyBoost technology on Vista ? ie is it worth me whacking my 4GB USB pendrive into the back of my PC ? Jim. |

What do you intend to do with the "pen drive" (what really is a pen drive, a flash memory gadget or what?). 4GB is too small to hols a VHD disk file for Vista, it would be at least 8 Gb after installation and growing. And by the way, VS and VPC guests cannot use any extra USB devices on the host except for mouse and keyboards, and these are not passed as USB devices, they are PS/2 devices to the guest. Yes, you can enter the BIOS as soon as you start a vm just the same as you
would any other PC. Press Del as the vm is starting. <jdr.smith@virgin.net> wrote in message news:fb026d64-2fd0-429a-9ce3-d28176fa7628@a22g2000hsc.googlegroups.com...
