How to enable one virtual machine to use two processors?

I have a Virtual Server (R2 sp1) running on a box with two processor, each
processor has two cores. But I found one virtual machine can only use one
core. I wonder if MS support to let one virtual machine to use more than one
physical processor.

In addition, I want to know how to change the settings for “Maximum
Capacityâ€, on my system, I can only change the settings for†Relative Weight
Reserved Capacityâ€, â€
(% of one CPU) Maximum Capacity†and “(% of one CPU) Reserved Capacityâ€.

Thanks!

hi Wang,

On VSR2, the VM can only use a max of one physical core. That's the
limitation today, may be addressed in a future version of MSVS.

For the settings, I think it's a matter of understanding - max capacity is
what it's defined as, and you can set the VM to utilise part of the max
capacity (i.e. set a ceiling) so that other processes don't get bogged down
- useful for apps that may run-away in a VM. Reserve capacity is useful
to enable a VM to respond more quickly from idle.

HTH,
Eugene Tan

Hello Eugene

Thanks a lot the information. It’s very useful for me. In addition, as for
"reserved capacity" and "Maximum Capacity", on my system, these two values
are read only (for websie) , I cannot specify values. If I use VMRCPlus,
these two values even are not shown. Do you have any clue?

Thanks!

On your web GUI you should have a Reserverd Capacity (% of one CPU) and a
Maximum Capacity (% of one CPU) that you change, the other 2 which have (%
of system) are not adjustable, and are established based on the physical
machine settings.

Your right, they don't show up in VMRC-Plus, which would be nice, maybe
version 1.7 will include them.

I was wrong, the adjustable resources do show up in VMRC-Plus for the VMs,
it's under the Resource Settings tab of the VM Properties.
