I know that SQL Server 2005 can be installed on a server running SQL
Server 2000 but can it be done in the opposite order. I'm running SQL Server 2005 on a new server box. I'd like to also install an instance of SQL 2000. Can this be done without any issues? Thanks |

While it is possible that this will work to some extent, it is not
recommended by Microsoft. I certainly would not cross my fingers and try this approach. I suggest backing up your SQL Server 2005 databases, uninstalling SQL Server 2005, installing SQL Server 2000, then installing SQL Server 2005 after SQL 2000 is up and running. The reverse order is definitely going to be prone to incompatibility issues, IMHO. While I can't guarantee that there won't be any issue, in my test
environments I have been installing SQL2000 while SQL2005 is already present. For my test purposes, this seems to work okay for me. Again, I'm not suggesting that I've checked out all the aspects of the SQL2000 instance installed this way. One thing I have heard about it that you should patch your 2000 with sp3. The reasoning as I
remember is that SQL Server 2000 will else take over the role of "SQL Server Browser" and 2000 do not know anything about 2005 instances. -- Tibor Karaszi, SQL Server MVP http://www.karaszi.com/sqlserver/default.asp http://sqlblog.com/blogs/tibor_karaszi "Randy K" <wawork@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:481f9772.20938734@msnews.microsoft.com... >I know that SQL Server 2005 can be installed on a server running SQL > Server 2000 but can it be done in the opposite order.
