Otherwise perhaps you should uninstall the product and reinstall both it and the update under the same account? > > This is a new PC with WinXPSP2, MSOffice 2007 and various other pieces of > software installed. > > The file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup > Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix.log' contains: .... Errors? Do you have access to another system which has installed this update more successfully? Perhaps it would show whether the following messages were significant? <extracts> > 07/07/2007 10:01:22.687 Enumeration: Cannot find following key file for product instance : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL > Server\90\Tools\\Binn\SQLServr.exe > 07/07/2007 10:01:24.234 Registry: Opened registry key "System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" > 07/07/2007 10:01:24.265 Registry: Cannot read registry key value "PendingFileRenameOperations" > 07/07/2007 10:01:27.750 Copy Engine: Creating MSI install log file at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup > Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQL9Express_Hotfix_KB921896_S QLEXPR.EXE > 07/07/2007 10:01:27.765 Registry: Opened registry key "Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer " > 07/07/2007 10:01:27.781 Registry: Cannot read registry key value "Debug" > 07/07/2007 10:03:10.890 EXE returned 1332: *** Shared String ID 131332 Not Found *** (Etc.) </extracts> Does this update require a boot after it? Then. if PendingFileRenameRenameOperations can't be written it could explain a repetitive aspect of your symptom, even without an obvious error. Did you find that MSI install log? Have you tried installing the update manually? Perhaps then you could specify verbose logging and get even more information than whatever it now contains? Does 131332 mean anything to you? E.g. as some kind of user identification? My only other idea would be that if those messages concerning registry access are significant that you could get better clues about them, indeed better information for all of these messages and whatever other diagnostics are being captured, by running ProcMon during the install. E.g. that would give you more detailed information about why the registry accesses were failing and also interleave such registry accesses with the writes to the various diagnostics files. BTW posting in here about failures of just the installs (especially if they still happen when an attempt is made to install an update manually), is a bit like running down the street chasing a delivery truck trying to ask a question about your new appliance... <eg> Cross-posting to an SQL NG for convenience. Hi Robert,
Thanks for your detailed reply. It's difficult to be certain of the history of the SQL Server product installation - I don't know how it got installed. My guess is that is was intalled with the OEM install of Office 2007 Prof before the resealing of the PC. I notice that the Outlook 2007 can't connect to the Business Contact Manager and I suspect that it is trying to use SQL Server. If it was installed under Office 2007 then the account that installed it will be different to the one I now use. Subsequently I installed Visual Studio 2007 Prof. and again I'm not sure if that installed SQL Server or not. I checked two other PCs which have SQL Server Express loaded, but they are not calling for the Update KB 921896, so I am none the wiser from that. This is the only PC I have access to with Office 2007 Prof. and with VS Prof. The number 131332 is not significant to me. If I uninstall SQL Server, I am not then sure of where to re-install it from - Office, VS or downloaded from the VS Express page. Do you have a recommendation to which I should use? Is it WU or MU which is calling for this update? If it's MU perhaps you only have WU working on the other machine? In any case I would assume that you could always download the equivalent update manually and install it on either machine? A benefit of that would be that you could request verbose logging from a command line invocation of such a download. And it would be further indication to you that the problem really has more to do with the product than with either update delivery system. > This > is the only PC I have access to with Office 2007 Prof. and with VS Prof. > > The number 131332 is not significant to me. > > If I uninstall SQL Server, I am not then sure of where to re-install it from > - Office, VS or downloaded from the VS Express page. Do you have a > recommendation to which I should use? Sorry, I don't use either product. That's why I'm cross-posting. BTW I have just noticed that some other updates (the .NET update in particular) provide very useful Application event log entries. If your update does that too you might get better (more specific) clues about the failure than just what its install log is providing. > Is it WU or MU which is calling for this update? > If it's MU perhaps you only have WU working on the other machine? I tried using MU but it made no difference - it did not want the update. Upon further reflection I am sure the problems must be to do with installing SQL Server from the Visual Studio distribution. When Outlook 2007 was initially installed it worked OK and there were no error messages associated with the Business Contact Manager. At around the same time as the failure to load the Windows update, Outlook started complaining that it couldn't connect to the MSSMLBIZ SQL database. So I figured it would be a good idea to uninstall SQL server from the PC and start again. Attempting to do this has been difficult! I followed some discussions on a similar problem (Can't uninstall or reinstall SQL Server 2005 Dev) which led to the KB Article ID : 909967 on how to uninstall manually. I have partially uninstalled SQL server and Outlook is now not trying to use MSSMLBIZ, but this is only because I have disabled the SQL services on startup (using msconfig.exe). When I try to reinstall SQL Server, it says it can't because the services aren't started. If I try to start the services, they won't because the software has been uninstalled. For example the SQL Server Active Directory er fails to start with the message: "The SQL Server Active Directory er service terminated with service-specific error 3221225572 (0xC0000064). " I am also surprised that the SQL Server Confiuration Manager appears under Computer Management -> Services and Applications. This makes me think that SQL Server is not completely uninstalled after all. The discussions on "Can't uninstall or reinstall SQL Server 2005 Dev" pointed eventually to MSXML4 needing to be uninstalled. This does not appear to be installed on my PC, so the problems I am experiencing seem to be different. I have not followed the suggestiong in "Can't uninstall or reinstall SQL Server 2005 Dev" to update the registry as it appears it was not the best thing to do. Can anyone find what might be at the bottom of this and give me some pointers on how to clean up the system so I can attempt to reinstall SQL Server? -- Dave Allen Software Consultant "Robert Aldwinckle" wrote: > (cross-post added to an SQL NG) > "DaveAllen" <DaveAllen@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:7ED214A4-D059-4F47-9A67-0ECB8D66B410@microsoft.com... > > Hi All, > > > > Windows Update wants to install the (KB 921896) but always fails to do so. > > The 'Review Update History' has the Error Code: 0x534.
