I can't find or install SP2 for the SQL Server 2005 Express edition that
installs with Visual Studio 2005 x64. This is a fresh new install on a fresh Visa x64 machine. During the installation process of Visual Studio 2005 x64 I was informed of a compatability issue of the SQL Server 2005 Express edition being installed with the package on Vista and that I needed to install Service Pack 2. I cannot find which update to use for SP2? I followed the links provided and did some searches of my own, but every link takes me to either to an update that fails or to a full installation exe. !!!!! Here are the pages I found and links to them: --------------------------------------- This one fails: Page title: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Available downloads: SQLServer2005SP2-KB921896-IA64-ENU.exe - 392.4 MB SQLServer2005SP2-KB921896-x64-ENU.exe - 339.4 MB <<< I thought it was this one. SQLServer2005SP2-KB921896-x86-ENU.exe - 282.4 MB --------------------------------------- This is a full install Page title: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Available downloads: SQLEXPR.EXE - 55.4 MB <<<< I thought it was this one. SQLEXPR32.EXE - 36.5 MB --------------------------------------- This too is a full install Page title: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express Service Pack 2 Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Available downloads: SQLServer2005_SSMSEE.msi - 43.1 MB SQLServer2005_SSMSEE_x64.msi - 43.6 MB <<< I thought it was this one. --------------------------------------- Where do I go to get the SP2 to update the SQL Server 2005 Express edition that is installs with Visual Studio 2005 Professional?!?!?!? |

Hello dbuchanan,
I understand that you want to upgrade the SQL Express Edition to SP2 which installed with VS 2005. The link http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...D5D-725C-4AFA- 9D65-E4465CDFF1E7&displaylang=en provide the upgrade install for the SQL Express. You could download the SQLEXPR.EXE - 55.4 MB and install to upgrade your Express to SP2. Also, if you have enable the Microsoft Update in the Windows Update Web Site, you could get the correct upgrade installation. I do not believe that you are correct.
I do not believe that the executable (SQLEXPR.exe) on the page you directed me to (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en) is the SP2 update for SQL Server 2005 Express! I am believe this for these reasons: Reason #1.) The installation behaves as if I have executed a first time install. Except for the agreement page that refers to SP2 there is nothing else that indicates that it has anything to do with SP2. When it runs it welcomes me to the "Microsoft SQL Server Installation Wizard". While proceeding there is a Feature Selection window with no mention of SP2. On the page for seleting or accepting the Instance name it opens whith a new instance name selected. But a went ahead just in case and accepted all defaults... Reason #2.) During Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Setup on the 'Existing components' page I am given this message: "The following components that you chose to install are already installed on the machine. To view a report of available options and alternatives click on Details." The details button displays this information: "Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQLEXPRESS) Allowed Action: Maintain (Action is only available from Add or Remove Programs) Reason: Cannot maintain product, to maintain the product go to Add or Remove Programs" Reason #3) This executable does not seem to recognize that it has anything to do with x64. Can you me out? dbuchanan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wei Lu [MSFT]" <weilu@online.microsoft.com> Newsgroups: microsoft.public.sqlserver.setup Sent: Friday, July 06, 2007 2:39 AM Subject: RE: Trying to Install SP2 for SQL Server 2005 Express (part of Visual Studio 2005 install) on a Vista Enterprise (x64) > Hello dbuchanan, > > I understand that you want to upgrade the SQL Express Edition to SP2 which > installed with VS 2005. > > The link > http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...D5D-725C-4AFA- > 9D65-E4465CDFF1E7&displaylang=en provide the upgrade install for the SQL > Express. > > You could download the SQLEXPR.EXE - 55.4 MB and install to upgrade your > Express to SP2. > > Also, if you have enable the Microsoft Update in the Windows Update Web > Site, you could get the correct upgrade installation. > > > Sincerely, > > Wei Lu > Microsoft Online Community Support > > ================================================== > > When responding to posts, please "Reply to Group" via your newsreader so > that others may learn and benefit from your issue. > > ================================================== > This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no > rights. > "Wei Lu [MSFT]" <weilu@online.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:Kx7j5h5vHHA.4612@TK2MSFTNGHUB02.phx.gbl... > Hello dbuchanan, > > I understand that you want to upgrade the SQL Express Edition to SP2 which > installed with VS 2005. > |

My guess is that the link is a slipstreamed full install (full product already service packed).
Perhaps this is what you want? http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/ -- Tibor Karaszi, SQL Server MVP http://www.karaszi.com/sqlserver/default.asp http://sqlblog.com/blogs/tibor_karaszi "dbuchanan" <dbuchanan@newsgroup.nospam> wrote in message news:uzhsyZ%23vHHA.4132@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... >I do not believe that you are correct. > > I do not believe that the executable (SQLEXPR.exe) on the page you directed me to > (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en) > is the SP2 update for SQL Server 2005 Express! > > I am believe this for these reasons: > > Reason #1.) Hello dbuchanan,
First, I would like to clarify one thing that there is no SQL Express x64 version. The SQL Express running on x64 machine is a 32Bit application and run under the WOW mode. Second, there is no separate SP2 for the SQL Express. There is only one full installation package. So you may need to remove the existing SQL Express and install the one with SP2. Thank you!
