How do I uninstall SQL Server 2005 (x64) Developer Ed (SP2) from Vista
Enterprise ed (x64) when the following attempts fail 1.) Uninstall using Add/Remove programs failed 2.) Manual uninstall attempts using instruction from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967 failed 3.) MSIZAP failed. ============================================== 1.) Detail on add/remove programs - I selected a SQL Server 2005 item and clicked uninstall. I expected a dialog to open where I could select uninistall all. Since that did not happen I proceeded to uninstall each item one at a time. I was able to uninstall most of SQL Server 2005 (x64) but "Uninstall or change a program" Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) still was shown. When I attempt to uninstall I am given the following message: "An error occurred while trying to uninstall Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit). It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (x64-bit) from the Programs and Features? Yes/No" In Services I could still see "SQL Server Reporting Services" (MSSQLSERVER) and I could stop and start it. I reinstalled the whole thing and tried again without success so I abandoned the standard uninstall and moved to the manual uninstall. ============================================== 2.) Detail on manual uninstall attepts - I reinstalled everyting incl (SP2) and followed these instructions http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967 item by item to the letter. When I tried to run the "ARPWrapper.exe" with the command: "ARPWrapper.exe /Remove" The uninstall form opened and showed the following: [x] Remove SQL Server 2005 instance components Select an instance (.)"MSSQLSERVER: Database Engine, Reporting Services" I select the default instance and clicked "Next>" and see the following: The following components will be uninstalled from your machine. To proceed, click finish .. Database Engine: MSSQLSERVER .. Reporting Services: MSSQLSERVER I click Finish and nothing happens! Absolutely Nothing! So I move down to the section titled: "If you experience problems" This section required registry editing. I navigated to the section instructed and click on the GUIDS and look for the following display names; .. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 .. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services .. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services .. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Notification Services .. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Integration Services .. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools .. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Books Online There were these items remaining ~ shown with the essential information 1.) Display Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (64-bit) GUID: {BEE3EC3D-0C91-4A3E-A42C-7634D32968F4} Uninstall string: MsiExec.exe /I{BEE3EC3D-0C91-4A3E-A42C-7634D32968F4} 2.) Display Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) GUID: {F14F2E25-99AF-42A9-977C-F6D0352DC59F} Uninstall string MsiExec.exe /I{F14F2E25-99AF-42A9-977C-F6D0352DC59F} 3.) Display Name: GDR 3054 for SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 (64-bit) ENU (KB934458) GUID: none Uninstall string: none 4.) Display Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) GUID: none Uninstall string: none Attempts to uninstall 1 and 2 above result in errors like: 0:Watson 1:1317 2:StreamSupport\Files 3:sqlCreateDirectory 4:5 5:e:\sql9__sp2_t\sql\setup\darwin\sqlcastub\catarg et.cpp 6:36 7:sqlcastub.dll 8:sqlrun.msi And: An error occurred while attempting to create the directory: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server \90\SetupBootstrap\bin\ ============================================== 3.) Detail of attempt using MSIZAP for Vista - I reinstalled SQL Server 2005 (x64) SP2 to get a fresh start. Then I ran MSIINV.exe and redirecting the output to a text file. I edited the resuts to show only the information I was interested in. Here are the results. Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English) {18C5A65B-0A39-40B5-B958-63055AFAB65C} MsiExec.exe /X{18C5A65B-0A39-40B5-B958-63055AFAB65C} Microsoft SQL Server Native Client {751EE164-9F12-4E57-ADB0-02D8F34A10AD} MsiExec.exe /I{751EE164-9F12-4E57-ADB0-02D8F34A10AD} Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer {AA0AA91C-2C23-452C-B62F-70054E856AB8} MsiExec.exe /I{AA0AA91C-2C23-452C-B62F-70054E856AB8} Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (64-bit) {BEE3EC3D-0C91-4A3E-A42C-7634D32968F4} MsiExec.exe /I{BEE3EC3D-0C91-4A3E-A42C-7634D32968F4} Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward compatibility {C92556F2-4950-48CF-ABA3-F0026B05BCE8} MsiExec.exe /I{C92556F2-4950-48CF-ABA3-F0026B05BCE8} Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) {F14F2E25-99AF-42A9-977C-F6D0352DC59F} MsiExec.exe /I{F14F2E25-99AF-42A9-977C-F6D0352DC59F} ============================================== I stopped short here because similar attepts at using MSIZAP failed on a Windows Server 2003 server. On that machine I was trying to uninstall Microsoft##SSEE after a failed uninstall of WSS 2007. The uninstall did not remove SSEE or display it in Add/Remove so that I could choose to remove it. Various attempts to remove using various instructions resulted in similar failures. After using MSIZAP on this server machine I believed I was successful becasue all reverences in the registry were removed. Yet - I was unable to take ownership over the files and unable to remove them from the server. And strangely still Windows Server 2005 on that same machine still saw SSEE. I had to reinstall the O/S on the Windows Server 2003 machine. ============================================== SOooooo How do I uninstall SQL Server 2005 Developer Ed (x64) from Vista Enterprise Ed (x64)??? |

Hello Wei Lu [MSFT],
I proceeded with your instruction, but there are a number of things that I could not do exactly and look for your assistance. This is my step by step notes and history following your instruction: ================================================== =========================== First a few notes: There are no such locations as: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting Services C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Report Designer C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Reporting Services Remember that I said SQL Server 2005 not SQL Server 2000: 2005 is 90 2000 is 80 Remember I said x64 edition therefore I have two Program Files paths: C:\Program Files And: C:\Program Files (x86) ================================================== ================ Step 2a). "Remove Report Server dlls" I can find no dlls you describe. Here is what I do find; --------------------- I do not have this path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Reporting Services But I do have this path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data No dlls to delete (this is where the databases are) I did not delete anything. --------------------- I don't have this path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Report Designer But I do have this path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools Yes it does not go further There were not dlls to delete --------------------- I don't have this path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Reporting Services But I have this path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Reporting Services no dlls to delete. Summary for Step 2a ~ no dlls deleted. ================================================== ================ Step 2b). "Remove tools items (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn)" I do not find the files you describe. Here is what I do find: --------------------- I don't have this path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn But I have this path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn And here are the files and folders located there batchparser90.dll bcp.exe OSQL.EXE Resources SEMMAP90.DLL SQLCMD.EXE SQLdiag.exe SqlLogShip.exe SqlLogShip.exe.config SqlManager.dll sqlresld90.dll SqlResourceLoader.dll SQLSCM90.DLL SQLSVC90.DLL xmlrw.dll I removed all files folders under this path. ================================================== ================ Step 5) (?) Remove IIS Vroots I don't know what you mean by Vroots, but here is what I found in IIS: Under "Application Pools" I found... --------------------- Name: ReportServer Status: started <<< I don't understand because the service: SQL Server Reporting Services is not started. ..NET Framework Version: v2.0 Managed Pipeline mode: Classic Identity: NetworkSevice Applications: 2 I stopped the "Report Server" under "Application pools" and removed it. --------------------- Also I found: In "Default Web Site" under "Web Sites" in IIS: Reports ReportServer I removed these. ================================================== ================ Step 6a) Remove registry Entries (First I back up the registry) --------------------- I do not find this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Reporting Services But I do have this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90 Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90 I have the following items: Bootstrap Cost Machines ProductID Replication Tools Uninstall Info As you can see nothing with "Reporting Services". --------------------- However here is what I think you want me to find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Reporting Services But it will not delete. I get this message: --------------------- Error Deleting Key Cannot delete Reporting Services: Error while deleting key. [OK] --------------------- Nothing could be or was deleted. ================================================== ================ Step 6b) Designer keys I do not have these keys: [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\Packages\{11b8c903-8ffd-4dfc-87ce-f6a82d77af6b}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\Packages\{4a0c6509-bf90-43da-abee-0aba3a8527f1}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\Editors\{CC84AFBD-DA02-46F4-8623-9F07E5569EDB}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\KeyBindingTables\{CB3675B8-701E-4f56-9167-2714E167FF3F}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\NewProjectTemplates\TemplateDirs\{4a0c6509-bf90-43da-abee-0aba3a8527f1}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\NewProjectTemplates\TemplateDirs\{69B942A4-7F5A-4fb3-8212-21CE123B1A37}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\Projects\{F14B399A-7131-4c87-9E4B-1186C45EF12D}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\ToolWindows\{3FD5E0CC-709A-4f8c-94C3-7F0F8DFF5BB2}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\InstalledProducts\Report Desgner] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\CLSID\{DF0CE101-A80D-426D-9606-BEAA92726B06}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\CLSID\{FB391598-D461-4cf4-B278-E30199FF259C}] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \7.1\CLSID\{F45BA896-3A93-4d52-BC09-CD17C4A76E53}] But I do have these keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \8.0\CLSID\{600dd186-2429-11d7-8bf6-00b0d03daa06} HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \8.0\CLSID\{600dd187-2429-11d7-8bf6-00b0d03daa06} HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \8.0\CLSID\{600dd188-2429-11d7-8bf6-00b0d03daa06} HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \8.0\CLSID\{600dd189-2429-11d7-8bf6-00b0d03daa06} HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \8.0\CLSID\{656d875f-2429-11d7-8bf6-00b0d03daa06} HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \8.0\CLSID\{656d8760-2429-11d7-8bf6-00b0d03daa06} HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \8.0\CLSID\{656d8763-2429-11d7-8bf6-00b0d03daa06} HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \8.0\CLSID\{656d8766-2429-11d7-8bf6-00b0d03daa06} And I also have this: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio \8.0\VC\VC_OBJECTS_PLATFORM_INFO Should I try to delete these? ================================================== ================ Step 7a) Remove Databases - Default names are ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB I deleted the following ReportServer.mdf ReportServer_log.ldf ReportServerTempDB.mdf ReportServerTempDB_log.ldf ================================================== ================ Step 7b) Remove RSExec role from master, msdb How do I do this? I cannot open SQL Server Management Studio ================================================== ================ What should I do next? How should I resolve the issues I encoutered above? How do I continue so that I can completely remove SQL Server 2005 (x64) Developer edition from this Vista machine? Hi. Wei Lu,
There were hundreds and hundreds of references in the registry for SQL Server. I began removing them. I had to change permissions to allow myself to delete items in the registry. I worked at it for about four hours over two days and then gave up after I encoutered the following circumstances 1.) I had run into up to ten items that would NOT allow removal 2.) I ran into many items where there was reasonable doubt whether they exclusively belonged to SQL Server and I could safely delete them. 3.) Then I cam accross about ten pages of solid SQL Server references that in themselves would have taken me hours and hours of the tedious delete and confirm staps. So I gave up in discust and reinstalled the operating system. The whole miserable mess cost me about two weeks of time lost with that machine. There is no reason that Microsoft can't build an uninstall tool to successfully remove SQL Server for an OS!!! In spite of your I felt very much on my own guessing my way through all this. I am equally sure that you share my same frustration because of a lack of resources available to you on such topics. Thank you for your assistance. We can both hope for better tools. dbuchanan "Wei Lu [MSFT]" <weilu@online.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:h0692QUvHHA.4612@TK2MSFTNGHUB02.phx.gbl... > Hi , > > How is everything going?
