I'm trying to install SQL Server SP2 on a SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.
I'm running SQL Server 2005, SSAS 2005, SSIS 2005, & SSRS 2005 with SP1. (I have also install VS 2005 Professional on this server.) I've copied the SP2 exe file on the local C: drive of the SQL 2005 Server and ran it directly on this server. The installation error off during the Setup Support Files. I get a window message that states "The following unexpected error occurred: Unable to install Windows Installer MSI file". I'm getting that same error. Please let me know if you find a solution.
I'm doing a local install (no network drives involved) and even tried copying the sqlsupport.msi file it's complaining about manually, but to no avail. -Ray Rankins "Jonathan" <jonmau@safeco.com> wrote in message news:e$406fgVHHA.1208@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > I'm trying to install SQL Server SP2 on a SQL Server 2005 Developer > Edition. > I'm running SQL Server 2005, SSAS 2005, SSIS 2005, & SSRS 2005 with SP1. > (I > have also install VS 2005 Professional on this server.) > > I've copied the SP2 exe file on the local C: drive of the SQL 2005 Server > and ran it directly on this server. > > The installation error off during the Setup Support Files. If you are running the SQL Server service under a domain login try switching
it to the Local System account. All my SQL Server services are running under the local account. The install
is being run from c:\temp. All SQL Server services are stopped at the time of the install. I have looked at the logs - the install does not get past the first step of installing the setup support files. The logs indicate that it cannot copy the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Cache\SQLSupport\x86\1033\SqlSupport.msi file. That file does exist in the install files as I've found it and attempted to copy it myself. I've checked the permissions on the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Cache\SQLSupport\x86\1033 and it's not locked down in any way. The messages at the end of the Hotfix.log file are the following: 02/23/2007 11:07:46.750 Installing file: SqlSupport.msi 02/23/2007 11:07:46.921 Copy Engine: Creating MSI install log file at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\Redist9_Hotfix_KB921896_SqlSu pport.msi.log 02/23/2007 11:07:47.015 Registry: Opened registry key "Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer " 02/23/2007 11:07:47.125 Registry: Cannot read registry key value "Debug" 02/23/2007 11:07:48.500 Registry: Opened registry key "Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer " 02/23/2007 11:07:48.531 Registry: Cannot read registry key value "Debug" 02/23/2007 11:07:48.593 Copy Engine: Error, unable to install MSI file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Cache\SQLSupport\x86\1033\SqlSupport.msi 02/23/2007 11:07:48.640 The following exception occurred: Unable to install Windows Installer MSI file Date: 02/23/2007 11:07:48.640 File: \depot\sqlvault\stable\setupmainl1\setup\sqlse\sql sedll\copyengine.cpp Line: 1378 02/23/2007 11:07:55.031 Watson: Param1 = Unknown 02/23/2007 11:07:55.109 Watson: Param2 = 0x64c 02/23/2007 11:07:55.187 Watson: Param3 = Unknown 02/23/2007 11:07:55.250 Watson: Param4 = 0x64c 02/23/2007 11:07:55.265 Watson: Param5 = copyengine.cpp@1378 02/23/2007 11:07:55.296 Watson: Param6 = Unknown 02/23/2007 11:07:55.328 Watson: Param7 = Redist9 02/23/2007 11:07:55.359 Watson: Param8 = @ 02/23/2007 11:07:55.390 Watson: Param9 = x86 02/23/2007 11:07:55.421 Watson: Param10 = 3042 02/23/2007 11:07:55.437 Attempting to continue the 32 bit ngen queue 02/23/2007 11:08:05.281 Watson: Param1 = Unknown 02/23/2007 11:08:05.312 Watson: Param2 = 0x643 02/23/2007 11:08:05.343 Watson: Param3 = Unknown 02/23/2007 11:08:05.375 Watson: Param4 = 0x64c 02/23/2007 11:08:05.390 Watson: Param5 = copyengine.cpp@1378 02/23/2007 11:08:05.421 Watson: Param6 = Unknown 02/23/2007 11:08:05.484 Watson: Param7 = Redist9 02/23/2007 11:08:05.562 Watson: Param8 = @ 02/23/2007 11:08:05.609 Watson: Param9 = x86 02/23/2007 11:08:05.625 Watson: Param10 = 3042 The messages in the Redist9_Hotfix_KB921896_SqlSupport.msi.log are as follows: === Verbose logging started: 2/23/2007 11:07:47 Build type: SHIP UNICODE 3.01.4000.2435 Calling process: c:\b60c367ba020164d228c49a6dfbe00\hotfix.exe === MSI (c) (3C:7C) [11:07:47:203]: Resetting cached policy values MSI (c) (3C:7C) [11:07:47:203]: Machine policy value 'Debug' is 0 MSI (c) (3C:7C) [11:07:47:203]: ******* RunEngine: ******* Product: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\Cache\SQLSupport\x86\1033\SqlSupport.msi ******* Action: ******* CommandLine: ********** MSI (c) (3C:7C) [11:07:47:203]: Client-side and UI is none or basic: Running entire install on the server. Okay - I was finally able to get SP2 installed. Apparently, something was
corrupted with the Windows Installer information for SQL Server 2005 as I was unable to even uninstall SQL Server 2005 itself via the Add/Remove programs control panel without getting the "The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it." error. I even tried re-installing SQL SErver 2005 from the initial setup file, but that was giving me the same error as the SP2 setup with the inability to install the SQL Server Setup Support files. I ended up having to get the Windows Installer Cleanup utility (http://support.microsoft.com/default...b/290301/en-us) to clear out the install information I first tried just deleting the SQL Setup Support Files with the installer cleanup utilty and then reinstalling them with the SQL Server 2005 installer. It was able to successfully re-install the SQL Setup Support files. Then I ran the SP2 install again and it got past the Setup Suppot files step, but then it just failed on most of the rest of the components. I then again tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 over what was already there, but that woudlnt' work either as it too was failing to re-install the installed database components. The only way to get it to work successfully completely was to run the Windows Installer Cleanup utility and remove all of the SQL Server 2005 installed components from the Windows INstaller database. I then reinstalled SQL Server 2005 from the original RTM install disk and then was able to apply SP2 successfully. On the plus side, all of my databases were still online and intact after this process (although it's probably a good idea to back them up or at least copy the mdf files somewhere safe after SQL Server is shut down). So, to summarize, if you are having the exact same problem with SP2 being unable to install the SQL Setup Support Files, the following should fix things and let you get your SQL SErver instance upgraded to SP2: 1. Download and run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and delete the SQL Setup Support Files and all SQL Server 2005 installed componenents from the WIndows Installer database 2. Re-install SQL Server 2005 from the initial setup disk 3. Run the SP2 setup utility. -Ray Rankins |
