Hello all,
Is it possible to install SQL Server 2005 Standard as an upgrade to MSDE such that it then becomes the default instance replacing MSDE as the default. I have read articles describing an upgrade to SQL 2005 Express, but not Standard. The articles indicate that existing databases in MSDE will be also updated to 90 compatibility during the install. If it can be done, are there any adverse consequences to installing SQL 2005 Std in this manner. Thanks in advance for your .... John |

Since I got no replies, apparently this was considered a "dumb" question,
even though there was a good reason for my asking. I will answer it. No... it is not possible to upgrade MSDE to SQL Server 2005 in order to save the databases. One must back up the DBs and then restore or just simply detach them and then re-attach to the new instance of SQL 2005. Don't forget to uninstall MSDE also, so you won't end up with a named instance of SQL 2005.
