Having a problem with a SQL 2000 install on Server 2003, SP1.

The server did have SQL installed, to it's D:\ drive, but due to a drive
failure, I lost the installation. I do have my data backed up, so I just
need to put the application back in place. When I try to do the install, I
get the error message about the version being unsupported and move past that.
The installation then appears to proceede normally, until it tries to start
the services to configure the installation. It then fails - I've posted the
sqlstp.log below. There is an error message about a "General Network Error"
and there is a Kb article about that, but it relates to the server name being
mixed-case, and that is not the problem I'm having.

Any or suggestions at all would be appreciated - I'm on the verge of
just blowing away the O/S and starting from scratch, but I don't want to
unless it's absolutely nessecary.

When you install SQL on Windows 2003, you'll get a message that it won't run
unless you install at least SQL Server 2000 SP3a. Install the service pack
and the post SP3a hotfix, or you can install SP4 and the post SP4 hotfix.
You won't need to reinstall the OS.

Having a problem with a SQL 2000 install on Server 2003, SP1.

The server did have SQL installed, to it's D:\ drive, but due to a drive
failure, I lost the installation. I do have my data backed up, so I just
need to put the application back in place. When I try to do the install, I
get the error message about the version being unsupported and move past
that.
The installation then appears to proceede normally, until it tries to start
the services to configure the installation. It then fails - I've posted the
sqlstp.log below. There is an error message about a "General Network Error"
and there is a Kb article about that, but it relates to the server name
being
mixed-case, and that is not the problem I'm having.

Any or suggestions at all would be appreciated - I'm on the verge of
just blowing away the O/S and starting from scratch, but I don't want to
unless it's absolutely nessecary.

I'm getting that message and contining past it - the installation completes
(all files are copied) but it fails when it tries to run the service for the
first time, then backs the installation out..

You should:

1) Install SQL Server 2000 and ignore the message.
2) Immediately install the service pack - 3a or 4. Don't attempt to run SQL
Server before doing this.
3) Install the appropriate hotfix.
4) Connect to SQL Server as normal.

I'm getting that message and contining past it - the installation completes

I can't install the SP... when you install SQL server, the service starts as
part of the installation process, to do initial configuration. That is the
point where the installation fails... since it fails during initial
configuration, the entire install is then backed out. Any attempt to install
a SP just results in "SQL Server 2000 is not installed"

Not sure what to do next, outside of opening a ticket with Microsoft. The
log you posted shows nothing out of the ordinary. I've installed SQL 2000
on Windows 2003 many times and didn't see this type of behaviour.
