Par défaut Issue related to NT and 2003

Hi,

I'm the systems administrator of my company. The domain consists of one PDC
controller and 6 BDC's, of course, under Windows NT.

Because of a new software that we need to use, we need to install the
Active Directory for this domain. But the financial department, doesn't
want to expend so much money in migrating all the controllers to Windows
2003.

The thing is that I know that I can upgrade the whole domain by upgrading
to Windows 2003 all the domain controllers under NT, but I don't know the
consecuences of installing a unique Domain Controller under Windows 2003
with Active Directory, co-existing with the rest of domain controllers
under NT.

Anybody s?

Thanks

Hi Paco,

You can either upgrade the PDC to W2k3 and leave in mixed mode
or you could create a W2k3 domain and a trust with existing domain.

They may not have much choice. Once you install a 2003 server that provides
authentication, such as AD, you need a Microsoft CAL for each person
accessing it. If all of your employees, or a majority of them anyway, will
be using the new software, then they each need a Server2003 CAL.

After that it's about $600 each in licensing to take of the remaining
servers to 2003. Unless you need to buy new hardware, and if you're still
running NT 4, you may need to.

Your finance department should understand risk and running NT nowadays is
very risky since there aren't any patches available for it.
