I have an XP Pro client that can only connect to the WAN via a VPN once the
user has logged into windows. Once logged in I add the client to the domain and get the usual reply "Welcome to the soandso domain". But when I log out and then try to log in using a doman account the domain cannot be found as the VPN tunnel has not yet been created. Is it posible to update the cached NT domain password details while logged into windows using the local admin account. Thanks |

By default, unless manually changed, the XP pro machine should
be using a local cached copy of the user credentials in the event a DC cannot be contacted. You can check the registry to see if this is the case: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon\ CachedLogonsCount = 10 A count of 0 would prevent accounts from being cached. I assume this means that the 11th time they login, it would no longer be
cached. Once the machine connects to the domain, does the password get chached again, thus resetting the count? No this means that only 11 seperate user accounts will
be cached on that paticular machine. Yes the new password will be cached after a successful logon to the domain with that paticular account.
