dear dns gurus,
i have setup a small w2k3 domain called testcompany.local in a w2k3 environment. dns i have setup on a dc called dc01.testcompany.local then i created a child domain called west.testcompany.local. the dns namespace i did not delegate to the new domain, so dc01.testcompany.local is also responsible for west.testcompany.local. now i only can find a soa record for testcompany.local. where is the soa record for west.testcompany.local ? thank you very much tim |

It would be in the west.testcompany.local forward lookup zone, if you had one, since this domain does not have a separate zone, there would be no SOA record for west.testcompany.local, because it is a subdomain of testcompany.local. The SOA record is used for zone information, (such as master servers) not domain information. Secondary servers use the SOA record to tell them where the master is, how long the zone is good, when and how often to refresh its info from the master. -- Best regards, Kevin D.
