I am trying to solve a svchost.exe problem where the DNS Client service
claims 98-100% of my CPU as soon as I open the connection to my ISP (dial-up). As a result, Windows hangs for quite awhile. I know the DNS Client service is the culprit because I can watch its behavior in Anvir Task Manager under Processes. Since MS Automatic Update Service is a known svchost problem source, I have tried every fix available for that to redundancy to no avail. I never had that service enabled to begin with. One poster in a forum talks about finding the DNS cache using command prompt. He says that was his problem and upon disabling or stopping it his svchost problem was solved. I tried using the exact same process he gives ( "Tasklist /SVC" command) and Windows says it is not a valid entry -- my experience with command prompt is limited in the first place. He found DNSCACHE somehow. People in the XP & support forum have offered only the automatic updates solutions so I am hoping this question would be appropriate here, inasmuch as you have dns in the name of the newsgroup. I can follow directions in an advanced mode but am out of my league conceptually here. Any you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. frogliver |

FYI: I went against a lot of advice to the contrary and stopped/disabled the
DNS Client service in Manager. That solved everything and there were no adverse effects. All is well again here. Thanks for reading. frogliver |

What operating system is it? Service Pack level? The DNS Client service is not necessarily required, but has it's purpose with DNS resolution algorithm, parsing the HOSTS file, etc. For your current issue, I have a feeling it has the older Windows Update client. Pleae read the following article to get an idea of what is happening and how to fix it.
