Please ! I can NOT understand was I mistaken or is the book of Microsoft
Corp. wrong. :-( I can't complete the Troubleshooting Lab on s.4-61 of the Chapter 4 "Configuring DNS Servers and Clients" of the book "MCSA/MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-291): Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure". I successfully completed ALL previous exercises, but when I enter ipconfig /registerdns on Computer2 I see in the EventViewers errors with EventId 11164 and 11165 on Computer2 and with EventId 800 on Computer1. I do know what must I do after this for Comp.2's registering in zones of Comp.1. But I DON'T KNOW how must I (and everybody) fulfil previous labs in order to complete this last one?!! If nobody can me maybe anyone knows how can I contact with authors of book J. C. Mackin and Ian McLean?. |

Domain appears later (in this book). There is dns suffix - h1.local - on both
computers and zones on the Computer1. I can send you the book. :-) dnscmd . /Config ..AllZones /AllowUpdate 1 "Meinolf Weber" wrote: > Hello JoeBradley, > > What is your domain name and how do you configure the DNS update? > > Best regards > > Meinolf Weber > Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers > no rights. > ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups > ** us YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > > > Thanks, but I red this article already... :-( It didn't me. > > > > "Meinolf Weber" wrote: > > > >> Hello JoeBradley, > >> > >> Have a look here: > >> http://technet2.microsoft.com/window...1583e419-88a6- > >> 4062-8807-d9eea99e3b421033.mspx?mfr=true > >> Best regards > >> > >> Meinolf Weber > >> Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and > >> confers > >> no rights. > >> ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups > >> ** us YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > >>> Please ! The zone name must be the exact same as the AD DNS name 3. The Primary Suffix must match the zone name. 4. The zone name cannot be a single label name 5. The DCs (and any other machine) must ONLY use this DNS in IP properties, NO others. If the local loopback is in ip properties, change it to the actual IP of the DNS server. 6. If the server is multihomed, expect problems unless you follow an elaborate set of steps to configure it correctly Please post an ipconfig /all to better us you towards coming up with a diagnosis. -- Regards, Ace This posting is provided "AS-IS" with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights. These are answers:
1. Completed. 2. Still there isn't any AD domain! It will be created later than on s.4-61 (I mean - following the course 70-291). 3. Completed. 4. Completed. 5. Still there isn't any DC! Following the book I created ICS (through dial-up conn.) on Comp1 (Server 2003 R2), DNS suffixes on it and Comp2 (same OS) and I didn't see in previous labs that I MUST use Comp1's IP in his, Comp1, IP-properties as his DNS server! The last lab was wrong as I wrote. OK, then I DID USE Comp1's IP in HIS properties as his DNS server. Lab was wrong too! On Comp2 ALL ALWAYS was OK in his ipconfig results - Comp1 was his DNS server, DHCP server and default router. 6. Yes, elaborate. I think all previous labs was OK because of my elaborate steps. Only small exclusion - earlier I tested new created zones on Comp1. Test was failing until I restarted DNS in Computer Management. 7. Excuse me for my english. :-) P.S. I'll try reinstall OS on both computers and shall NOT install R2, only Server 2003 SP1. May be it will ... If not, I'll send you ipconfig results. May be it will ... If not, I'll send > you ipconfig results. No problem about your English. You are doing fine. No problem about no domain as well. If you are using ICS, a DNS or DHCP server cannot be running on an ICS server. This is because the ICS server creates a mini-DHCP service that will conflict. The mini-DHCP service has a scope of 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254 and will randomly hand out address and not in sequence from 2 to 254. DNS will conflict as well because ICS will 'proxy' (or 'pass') any requests to the external NIC's configured DNS server, which you would normally use your ISP's. So if an internal client were to get an IP from the ICS server, it will automaticlly get the ICS server as the DNS address, so when it will try to register, it will automatically send the registration request to your ISP. This is why you are getting the 11164 and 11165 errors. Reinstalling will NOT . To make this work, eliminate ICS. ICS is designed for home users who are not familiar with proper configuration. Purchase a cheapo (meaning an inexpensive) Cable/DSL router such as a Linksy router ( US $40 or so) and use that as your router instead of the server as a NAT device. Eliminate or disable one of the NICs on the server. Install DNS and DHCP. Only point to itself for DNS. In DHCP, configure a scope and use the server's address for DHCP Option 006 (the DNS address). Hello Ace Fekay [MVP],
thanks also from me about the explanation about ICS on a server and the consequences. Just a small remark, some years ago when i started with networking and domains, i also used ICS on a Domain controller(multihomed) and have disabled the ICS-DHCP. So it was no problem to use the internal DHCP/DNS services with a different scope then 192.168.x.x Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups ** us YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > In news:39AE14CC-8B22-4851-83A9-3E0E7BCE382D@microsoft.com, JoeBradley > <JoeBradley@discussions.microsoft.com> typed: > >> These are answers: >> 1. I tried using ICS many years ago too and I found it was a royal PITA (pain in the butt) because of it's nuances. I've stayed away from it ever since, especially that NAT services are available under RRAS. Disabling ICS-DHCP and using an internal DHCP/DNS is a good idea if using ICS and the way to go. The only scenario I see a problem with is using ICS on a DC because it would invoke those eventIDs because of DNS services conflicts. Also with ICS, unless SP2 or a recent update changed it which I am not aware of, I do not believe you can change the default 192.168.1.1/24 IP and subnet assignment.for the internal NIC. I would actually use NAT can be controlled better. Ace |

Hello Ace Fekay [MVP],
It was running on a 2000 DC with Exchange installed and runs without any errors/warnings in the event log over 2 years. That's the time when i got a real router. Thanks, but would you look at this book, please? Then I'll feel myself more
freely... :-) I thought really that the course was written in his logicality as if on purpose! 0) I haven't a second LAN connection (more punctually HAVE, but it is disabled), ICS is created on the dial-up. 1) A real DHCP server isn't running - ONLY mini-service. It seems to me there aren't any conflicts because of it. 2) The real DNS server IS running, but zone's forwarding is off. Why ICS server will send the registration request to ISP's servers??? And (to follow upon an advice from a russian forum) when I ENTERED ICS-Server's IP as HIS DNS server in properties of his LAN connection (this record was empty from before),after DELETED and after RECREATED same zones - I see the registering of the second server is OK! But I don't like this way. :-) P.S. didn't try still after the reinstalling. Right before I left my full time trainer position in '05, the center started changing to this book for the core classes, but I was scheduled to teach one week after the next of Exchange and other higher end courses so I never really got a chance to look at this or prep it. They did give me one of each of these books, but I just gave them away to some students who needed them. I assumed it's accurate, but I'll take your word it's incorrect or misguided. 0. The dialup is an interface, which ICS needs two to work. 1. Ok, so you will not get DHCP conflicts. 2. ICS sends reg requests to the DNS server configured in the machine's IP properties. For you to use your own DNS server, you would need to point to itself for DNS. Now I've never tried this. What I assume would happen is ICS will force it to use the IP address, which is itself, then I'm not sure if the main DNS service will respond or it will create a port 53 conflict between the DNS server or the ICS DNS proxy service. You can test it and let me know. My recommendations is to completely eliminate ICS and configure and use NAT under RRAS. This is better of and you have much more control over the whole configuration over ICS. You would need to first create a Demand Dial interface in RRAS for the dialup ISP. Then configure NAT to use this as the outside interface. Set your DNS to yourself. Install and configure DHCP. I believe this will give you a better shot at learning Windows network services. Ace |

Thank you for advice.
Just that's my nature (I'm mathematician :-)) - go in series from begin to end. NAT and RRAS appear in the course but later. Additionally I wanted to find WHY it don't work... Basically ICS was designed to be easily setup by a layman for a home network. Being mathematically and assumingly analytic in mind as well as curious, I believe you will like the RRAS and other services modules later on in the book. Post back if you have any more questions.
