Windows 2003 Server RC2 SP2
3COM 3C940 GB Onboard NIC

I recently installed 2003 server. Got the latest updates. I then set up this
machine as a domain controller on a new forest and followed the the
instructions to set up the DNS. Now if I try to do anything over the
interent, I am lucky to get a full page to load. There seems to be all kinds
of communications problems. If I stop the DNS and point everything over to
my old server which I want to decomission when this one is up and running,
all network performance is perfectly fine.

Any thoughts?

from the machine.

Did you configure a forwarder to your ISP's DNS on the DNS server properties
in the management console?

Some more information:

My DNS setup looks slightly different then that of another functional domain
(separate forest). The current one has an _msdcs.xxx.xxx entry under forward
lookup zones and it has no reverse lookup zones defined. My other dns also a
pdc on 2003 server doesn't have this entry and it does have a reverse lookup
zone defined. I am not sure if this has any effect on anything.

I am also getting some interesting information in the dns event viewer:
The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a packet from
68.87.66.196. The packet will be rejected. The event data contains the DNS
packet.

I am getting a few of these errors. This address is one of the DNS servers
which I forward to. I would think this might be indicative of some type of
nic / driver issue. However, when not configured as a DNS the networking
flies.

This is the only DC in your new forest, then? Old server and new server
are in different forests? Are you using the same forwarders that you are
using on your old server in the DNS properties in the "Forwarders" tab of
your new server? Have you tried clearing the cache and restarting DNS and
then going into CMD and running an "ipconfig /flushdns" and an "ipconfig
/registerdns"? From CMD, can you ping a website, for example, www.google.com,
or maybe trying ping google's IP (64.223.167.99)? Can it ping both, or just
the IP address of the website? Or neither?

I cannot test your forwarder, it refuses queries from me, probably an ISP
restriction in place, try changing the forwarder to 4.2.2.2 or 4.2.2.1 both
are very fast and reliable.

That seems to be the problem. I switched over to forwarding to the DNS
enteries that you mentioned and everything is happy. I don't understand why
this is a problem. My other DNS server in the old forest is forwarding
requests to these same DNS servers without issue. I think these are the DNS
Servers the Verizon FIOS provides for their customers use. I forget as I set
it up a while ago.

Any thoughts as to what would cause one server to have difficulties and the
other not?

Who runs the servers at the addresses you provided?

Probably the same reason I cannot get it to resolve names, it set up to
accept queries from only certain networks.

Verizon owns the IP addresses and the domain in the PTR, so I'm pretty sure
Verizon operates them.
