Par défaut DNS DHCP snapin abnormality

All,

When I open my DNS & DHCP snapin I can see my seven domain controllers.
Three of which are WS 2003 Std. and Four are WS 2000 Std.

They all have the following type names

DC01.mydomain
DC02.mydomain
DC03.mydomain
etc

Now for some reason one of the servers is showing up as "DC04.old_domain"

We did a domain name change over a year ago and now for some reason this
rogue dc seems be pulling its old domain name from somewhere...
If I check the DC itself it all looks fine and seems to be configured fine,
if I do an nslookup it picks up the correct name or if I do a dcdiag on the
server its all fine too.

The problem just seems to be in AD or some hidden attribute I dont know about.

I find it quite baffling,

Any ideas anyone?

Is old_domain still in your DNS suffix search list?
Connection or Primary DNS suffix?
Is there still a zone with this name in DNS?

Hi Kevin,

My response keeps crashing when I try to post so Ill try it again

Is old_domain still in your DNS suffix search list?
No, we only have our current domain listed.

Connection or Primary DNS suffix?

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : DC4.mydomain
Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . : mydomain
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : mydomain

Is there still a zone with this name in DNS?
Yes we still have a zone for the old domain name. However we only 1 host
record in it and our seven Name server records, which all look fine.

Thanks for your so far Kevin,

There are a couple of things bothering me after doing some thought on this,
one is that if mydomain is representative of your actual domain name, it
would be a single label DNS domain name which is very problematic for DNS
because it would be a single label DNS name.
The other is that you stated you did a domain name change which you cannot
do with Windows 2000 domain controllers in a domain, in order to do a domain
name change, the forest has to be in Windows Server 2003 functional level
and therefore you could not have Windows 2000 DCs in the domain.

Hi Kevin,

Mydomain is not my actual domain name, nor my dcs labeled DC1, 2 etc. I just
prefer to remove any actual information before posting to the forums. I
should have made that clear sorry.
It was a domain migration we carried out, not an actual domain name change.
Our company has changed names a few times now so the last time, we changed
the domain name to a generic one so it wouldn't matter what the actual
official Company was.

The problem is quite strange, I plan on upgrading the rest of the DCs to
2003 in the next two months so hopefully that will fix the issue. I just
don't like not knowing why its showing the old information inthe first place.

You are no very clear on exactly where it is showing the wrong name, is it
the records, or is it just the way the name is display when you open the
console?

If it is the name displayed for the server's name when you open the console,
the only importance is that it resolves with NetBIOS, DNS or an Alias name
made up the resolves toi the server's name.
