I had a w2k domain in mixed mode with 2 w2k DCs, both running dns integrated
AD zones. It is a single forest/domain. I wanted to install a w2k3 DC so I ran the adprep off the w2k CD and it ran successfully. I thought I saw the forestdnszone and domaindnszone added to the dns Integrated AD zone on the 2 w2k DCs. When I ran dcpromo on the w2k3 server I got an error saying that the forest was not ready or something to that effect. So I ran the adprep off the w2k3 CD for the forestprep and it ran successfully. I also ran adprep for the domainprep but it said it had already been run. So I tried dcpromo again on the w2k3 server and it ran successfully and then I installed dns on it for the integrated AD zone. But now there is no forestdnszone nor domaindnszone on any of the DCs dns . The forest function level is still w2k and the domain function level is still w2k mixed. There are no errors in the system, directory service, file replication, dns or application logs. Everything seems to be working, I've ran dcdiag and netdiag with no errors. So my question is, in this environment, should there be a forestdnszone and domaindnszone under the integrated AD zone? thanks for any /lesson. |

Use Create Default Application Directory Partitions... from the context
senstive menu of the Windows Server 2003 DC in the DNS management console. This should create the partitions. However, you will not really be able to configure/take full advantage of them until you switch to the Windows 2003 functional level (which in turn implies upgrade of your DCs to Windows Server 2003)... hth Marcin |
