I am running DNS server on a Windows 2003 server. when I go to sites to check
my DNS they keep reporting a problem since my DNS is seen as an "Open DNS". According to what I have read I should disable recursive lookups on the DNS server to stop this. However when I do this none of the client machines can access the internet. Any will be greatly appreciated. |

What happens if you remove the Forwarder and use the Root Hints in the DNS
server configuration? I do not believe I have any forwarders configured.

OK, it sounds like you are using your own server to host the zones for your
internet domains. 1) Best idea is to leave them with the people who registered the domain, unless you have very particular requirements. 2) If you do host your own zones, then this is intended to be a service to internet users, not your own internal users. You are supposed to disable recursion so you provide answers only for the domains you are authoritative for. You can't use this DNS server also for your internal purposes. If you disable recursion, the server does not answer except for its own zones, and so is useless for general internet lookups. 3) If you try to do both, that's exactly the report you should get Anthony, http://www.airdesk.com "Joe McHale" <JoeMcHale@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:486017D7-4BFA-4505-833D-B9992CBDFCD3@microsoft.com... >I do not believe I have any forwarders configured. > > "Anthony" wrote: > >> What happens if you remove the Forwarder and use the Root Hints in the >> DNS >> server configuration? >> Anthony, http://www.airdesk.com >> >> >> "Joe McHale" <JoeMcHale@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> news:5C854F87-71F7-454D-8FBA-EBCD3A7D004E@microsoft.com... >> >I am running DNS server on a Windows 2003 server. when I go to sites to >> >check >> > my DNS they keep reporting a problem since my DNS is seen as an "Open >> > DNS". >> > According to what I have read I should disable recursive lookups on the >> > DNS >> > server to stop this. Hi Joe,
You also might want to look at setting your zone transfers so that only servers listed on your DNS Servers tab are able to get transfers. You'll want to prevent anyone else from being able to openly browse your DNS -- especially if you list routers and switches in there. -- Ryan Hanisco MCSE, MCTS: SQL 2005, Project+ http://www.techsterity.com Chicago, IL Remember: Marking ful answers s everyone find the info they need quickly.
