Par défaut How many DNS servers will a client use

In my DHCP settings, I have created six DNS servers. Will my clients
actually use all six, or is there a limit to how many are actually used?

Hello bookermgt@discussions.microsoft.com,

The client will always use the preferred DNS, if I am right from DHCP options,
it will be the first in the list. It will only use another DNS server if
the preferred is not available.

Best regards

They will have the possibility to use all 6 - they will have the list of all
6. If first is not responding next one is and so on.

This is incorrect or at least misleading but Meinolf you likely understand
it
as you go on to say below:

> It will only use another DNS server if the preferred is not available.

The client will PREFER the "Preferred" or First listed server but it will
use the next etc if the preferred is unavailable OR perhaps if the first is
merely slow to answer.

Clients will also tend to "latch on" or "stick to" the server that is
currently
working EVEN IF the Preferred Server becomes available (or faster)
again -- until a reboot or until an arbitrary time passes and it finds the
original preferred DNS server.

Also for the original poster:

Likely the question real question is will it use "each one" for an address
that is not found in the earlier servers, which it will NOT do.

Clients will use AT MOST ONE DNS server, usually the preferred, IF
it answers.

That is, clients will not try Server1 and if the name isn't found move on to
Server2.

Once ANY DNS Server answers the client will presume that every other
DNS server (in the world) will return the exact same answer, even a Negative
(not found) answer.

Unfortunately, the resolver service algorithm does not work that way. Herb
provided some info on why. These articles should also explain further.

Thanks,
One of the main tones I got out of this discussion is that there is no harm
in listing six, but that it will not use all six. I will read the links to
ge ta more thorough understanding.

Thanks

That's correct. Depending on the circumstances, it may not even go past the
first.

No harm except that it is PROBABLY a waste of (your) time after the first
few.

And it will "not use" all of them as long as an EARLIER one in the list is
"alive".
