Hello all,
I have a strange problem with my 2003 member servers (with service pack 1 applied). I have three internal DNS servers running on my local network. All three are 2003 Domain controllers with integrated AD DNS. All of my XP (sp2) clients will switch to the alternate DNS and resolve addresses properly if the primary DNS server is unavailable. All of my windows 2000 (SP4 with rollup1) work the same way. The problem is my member servers in the domain. I have defined the three DNS servers in the IP tab the same way and in the same order as found in the XP clients yet if the DNS server first listed is unavailable the servers will never switch to either of the other two DNS servers. I have tried nslookup with set d2 enabled and there is no attempt to move on to the next server in the order when a lookup is attempted. It simply shows the request timing out to the primary server and that is all that happens. Manually typing "server (alternate DNS IP)" and then performing an nslookup works great, and the third DNS server entry works as well manually. I am at a loss as to why the the 2003 servers do not move on to the alternate DNS servers when the primary fails. Any ideas? Thank you in advance. |
