Good Day,
I am looking for some info on scavenging DNS records. Here is my issue. I have setup a Sonicwall and pointed it at our internal DNS server so that when a computer goes to a web site I can see who or what the computer is doing. It worked but I noticed that my computer name or IP address was off after I looked at it. It seems that I have multiply listing of old IP address or names listed in the DNS listing which shows older computers with older IP address (we have internal DHCP). I was looking around and found some stuff about scavenging and it looks like that is what I should activate. After checking the settings I found that it was not set. We are running windows 2003 SP1 and have the following servers Exchange 2003 SP2, SQL 2000. Desktops are running Windows XP SP2 So I would like to know a little bit more about it. What does it do? Can it cause issues down the road and if so what? What is the normal setting for a small company say 50 users. Thank You Adam Raff |

Hello Adam,
Thank you for using newsgroup! From your post, if the issue occurs on several clients, you may use command "ipconfig /flushdns" to purge the DNS resolver cache. Scavenging will clean up names that have been dynamically registered in your
dns zone you have defined for scavenging. There are two placed that have to be defined. Scavenging has to be defined on both the zone you want scavenged as well as the dns server that is to do the scavenging. The default time to complete a scavenge run is 14 days. To get an explanation of the full process, I would recommend reading http://searchwincomputing.techtarget...040355,00.html If you have specific questions please post a follow up question -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT http://www.pbbergs.com Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
