Hello,
we are currently migrating from one site to another, which implicates also the change of the IP address range. At the same time, we want to replace our DNS with a new machine. My questions are now: - Is there any procedure to respect when changing the IP address of the DNS server since the old address 10.120.4.x/24 will be replaced by a new 10.160.4.x/24? Does the DC care about its IP-address. - At the same time, we want to move the DNS to a new machine. I already imported the zones to the new machine(which is in the new address range), but are there other operations to do when changing the address of the DNS server and modifing the "NS"-record in order to prevent problems in AD(and of course, change the client DNS-settings ) Thanx in advance CB |

When you change your dns' IP address make sure you modify all clients that
have that servers defined for resolution. The DC doesn't care what its IP address is. It should be a simple move, when you restart the netlogon service (When you reboot) all the dns service records should be re-registered. I would go through both forward and reverse and validate that things cleaned up, but I'm just being cautious. Once you move the dc to the new site make sure you drag the dc object to the new site as well as update the ip addresses, as you already stated. -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT http://www.pbbergs.com Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. <nadine.gries@googlemail.com> wrote in message news:1174476410.511311.133200@y80g2000hsf.googlegr oups.com... > Hello, > we are currently migrating from one site to another, which implicates > also the change of the IP address range. So, if I am hearing correctly, your DC is not running DNS services
but instead you have a separate box that runs DNS. ?? If that is correct, are you using dynamic DNS ? You can orient domain joined systems that are post-W2k to use the new DNS server IP by group policy settings. Depending on the dDNS or not question, the DC move obviously does not or does have another step to get the DNS records correct. If you are using DNS services on DCs and allowing dDNS then make sure that the DC that is being moved is not pointing to itself for DNS in its Tcp/Ip settings during the move / IP change, since it _must_ tell the rest of the DNS services for the forest about its new IP but cannot do that if it only tells itself and the others do not know the new IP to find out what the change was.
