Hello,
we have currently a Novell DNS that hosts about 20 zones and a Windows DNS that hosts 3 zones. Our DHCP-server is also running on the Novell server. Our goal is now to eliminate the Novell DNS/DHCP and to use only the Windows DNS/DHCP in the future. My idea was to configure the Windows DNS as a secondary DNS for the Novell DNS and to do the zone transfer by this way(I am not a Novell specialist so I don't know if it is possible ona Novell DNS server). Once the zone transfer done, I would use a group policy to reconfigure the clients to use the WIndows DNS as a primary DNS and in a first time the Novell DNS as a secondary(in order to be able to test if the Windows DNS works correctly and in order to maintain the Windows DNS up to date with regular zone transfers until the DHCP is configured on a Windows machine). In a second step I will configure the Windows DHCP server with the same zones than the Novell DHCP(but putting the adress leases into the Windows DNS) and switch from the Novell DNS to the Windows once outside working ours to be sure that all the clients use the same DHCP. Is that a possible scenario? Will Novell be able to do its zone transfer to the Windows server. In theorie, they are both Bind- compatible, but is this really the case? What are the limitations of the solutions and what are the points to really take care of and potential problems? Anyone already did such a migration? Thanx in advance Best regards Claude |
