Any insight here would be much appreciated.
Here's the set up...SBS2000 set up as domain controller, no DNS server or DHCP server in domain (at all!). Basically there are win xp home pc's using it as a file server each configured with static IP's and static DNS IP's looking to our ISP's DNS servers, pointed to the shared folder on the SBS2000 machine. (over kill for folder sharing, but its the beginning of a small business network) The problem is all of the DNS error messages in SBS2000. AD is not really being used external to the SBS machine and when I start the DNS service, there seems to be network latency issues that develope. My question is even with static DNS IP's set for the xp home machines, will the added DNS server in SBS2000 cause any conflicts (such as with two DHCP servers)? thanks for any. |

> or DHCP server in domain (at all!). You are in a domain setup, that means AD is in use. AD absolutely must have a DNS server set up for the AD domain. Basically there are win xp home > pc's using it as a file server each configured with static IP's and > static DNS IP's looking to our ISP's DNS servers, pointed to the shared > folder on the SBS2000 machine. (over kill for folder sharing, but its > the beginning of a small business network) XP home can not join a domain. Also the DNS settings are wrong. Basic AD DNS is point all AD clients to the DNS server set up for the AD domain ONLY. Point the DNS server set up for the AD domain to itself in the properties of TCP/IP for DNS resolution. For Internet access either use root hints or set up the AD DNS server to forward requests and list your ISP's DNS server as the forwarder. This is the only place on your AD domain your ISP's DNS server should be listed. You need to move the XP home computers to XP professional if you want them to join your existing AD domain. hth DDS "Looch" <lucianoj2005@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:1167154979.615679.84980@48g2000cwx.googlegrou ps.com... > Any insight here would be much appreciated. > > Here's the set up...SBS2000 set up as domain controller, no DNS server > or DHCP server in domain (at all!).
