I am having a perplexing DNS issue. Our domain is 2000AD. We are moving to
AD2K3 and in preperation for this I have setup our first 2K3 DC.

Our main AD2K server is running out of space. This server was our GC, DNS
and DHCP server. In preperation I moved DNS to another server and made it
the main DNS server as well as the GC. This is an AD2K server as well.
Since we are moving up to AD2K3 The old DNS server is still active as it will
take a week or so for DHCP to filter throughout the network with the new DNS
server.

I am using VMWARE on the first 2K3 server I have promoted to a DC. This
server is also acting as my new DHCP server. When this server was built it
was configured with DHCP but has since had a hard-coded IP addy. The issue
is this. On both the "base" VMWARE server which is nothing more than a W2K3
server which also used DHCP on the initial install AND on the "virtual"
server that is runnign W2K3 and is a DC and DHCP server the DNS entries on
the DNS server keep getting over written with the initial IP addy that they
grabbed from DHCP. It does not matter that I have deleted these entries on
both my DNS servers and recreated them with the correct hard coded IP addy in
15 minutes or so they will be overwritten and revert back to the old IP
address.

I have checked "netlogon.dns" but in both cases it has the correct IP addy.

Can anyone tell me how to stop the DNS entries from being overwritten by the
"old" ip addy's?

It is automaticaly registering. If the DC has a static IP, then you
shouldn't be seeing this problem.

How many DHCP servers are there? Your post indicates more than one, but then
again, trying to read thru it again, I may be missing something.

As long as an interface is configured with a static IP, it should not be
registering anything else.

btw- if you created a new 2003 DC for your 2000 domain, it is required to
move the DNM, SM and GC over to it.

I still only have one DHCP server that I migrated to the new W2K3 DC. It is
definately hard coded yet the DNS entries on both DNS servers are definately
being overwritten with the old IP addy it grabbed on the initial install
(DHCP)

Again the W2K3 DC, DHCP server is a VMWARE server and I am wondering if this
is the cause of the issue tho I think it should not be.

I honestly wouldn't put a DC in a virtual environment. Not sure if this is
the problem, but if a machine is set as a static IP config, then that is all
that should be registering. Provide an ipconfig /all of the DC please.Maybe
there's another interface that is registering. Is it also registering the
(same as parent) IP or the host, or both? If it is a GC, look under the
_gc._msdcs.domain.com record and see if it is also registering the false
info.
