Originally we had just one DHCP server on our network that was also serving
as a DNS server. The DHCP server only gives out IP's based on MAC address reservations. It also assigns the router IP, DNS Server and DNS domain name. Just recently we added another DHCP server which is a domain controller for a completely separate domain. It assigns completely different IP's, DNS servers and DNS domain name. It also assigns IP's based on your MAC address. For some strange reason, if I lease an IP from the first DHCP server - after about 24 hours or so, i'll notice that my connection specific DNS suffix changes to the domain information (DNS suffix, DNS Server and DHCP server)of the second DHCP server. Although my IP address stays the same. A simple IPCONFIG /RENEW will restore my network settings from the first server. Any ideas on why my DNS info just changes on it's own? |

If you see the change in 24 hours, it kind of tells me the DHCP lease is two days. It's problematic at best having two DHCP servers unless configured in an 80/20 split. And without looking up technical info on it, it is strange that if each DHCP server is ONLY strictly providing ip configurations by reservations. It would appear that the other server, even though it doesn;t have a lease reservation for the workstation, it is responding faster than the one you want to use. Normally at 50% of the lease, the DHCP client will attempt to renew it;s lease from the server it received the original auto config from, but apparently if the original server is not responding fast enough, it appears the other one is, but only providing the options and not the IP itself. Unless someone else can give you a better solution that I can't think of at this time, it may be easier to either segment the two domains, use one DHCP server and don't configure the suffix and provide the Primary DNS Suffix thru a GPO, or both without the suffix and using a GPO. -- Ace Innovative IT Concepts, Inc (IITCI) Willow Grove, PA This posting is provided "AS-IS" with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.
