Hello
I have a simple question, in fact, I just want to know if the following scenario works or if I am totaly wrong I have an email server in a small company, connected to the net via adsl line. As the company is in the country side, sometimes, internet link goes down. So all the emails sent to us meanwhile are lost...It could kill the company quite quickly. As we are not big enough to own a second server. i d like to setup a failover with 2 mx records with different priorities pointing to the main server first and to the server hosting our website outside ( it has qmail running on fedora) The result would be: A mail is sent to us, if the internet link is down or if the mailbox cannot be reached, the email would go to the second mail server wich is outside. Then to make sure that no email go there by mistake, I would configure the pop3 connector to retrieve emails twice a day Does that make sense? Will it work? O |

So all the emails sent to us meanwhile are lost Not true, any legitimate mail server delivering legitimate mail will attempt to deliver the mail at a later time. Depending on the mail server, it will attempt to deliver the mail for another 4 or 5 days before giving up and returning an NDR (non delivery receipt), some will return a DDR (Delayed delivery receipt) to the original sender within a few hours of non-delivery. But just about all will keep trying for a day or two before returning an NDR. But no mail server worth half its stuff will just send the mail into an eternal black hole unless it suspects it is spam. Some mail server will send the mail into oblivion only if it is sure it IS spam, ....It > could kill the company quite quickly. Store and forward is the best option. -- Best regards, Kevin D.
