Par défaut How to setup secondary DNS to replace primary DNS

Hi Everyone,

1. We run our primary DNS on our primary domain controller on a windows 2003
server SP1, we are replacing the server. How can we setup the secondary DNS
to replace the Primary DNS? What steps need to be taken?
2. The secondary DNS is also a backup domain controler when we need to make
it as primary as well.

Thanks in advance!

Hi
- From security prespective you should have AD Integrated Zone instead of
Primary Zone, if you need to configure that just post here and we
you out with that.

-Transforming Secondary in Primary zone is pretty straight forward,
1 - You need to allow zone transfer from the primary zone to the server
where you'll have the secondary zone configured.
2 - Install Dns server on the other server (where the secondary zone will be
hosted), and reate a new zone -> choose secondary -> and point to the server
where the primary is hosted.
3 - Check if the zone has been transfered (sometimes you need to restart the
DNS service).
4 - If everything ok, just goto secondary zone properties and make it
Primary.
5 - Map the clients to the new server

Done!!!

Note:When you make the secondary zone primary, the other server won't
replicate changes for that new primary created zone. You can only have (in
replication scenario) 1 primary zone and all others should be secondaries.

In addition to Jorge's reponse, if the firt DC has AD integrated zones, when
you promote the new DC w/DNS, the ADI zones will replicate to the new DC
without you doing a thing if replication is working.
