I have our ISPs DNS server(TW Roadrunner) set up as forwarder for our 2003 server DNS. I have disababled recursion by default and I get below. I dont want to use recursion for security reasons. What can I do at my end to resolve this without using recursion. I always thought that was only for the root hints- must have been wrong Regards CR > > The DNS server is configured to forward to a non-recursive DNS server at 24.94.163.33. > > DNS servers in forwarders list MUST be configured to process recursive queries. > Either > 1) fix the forwarder (24.94.163.33) to allow recursion > - connect to it with DNS Manager > - bring up server properties > - open "Advanced" tab > - uncheck "Disable Recursion" > - click OK > OR > 2) remove this forwarder from this servers forwarders list > - DNS Manager > - bring up server properties > - open "Forwarders" tab > - remove (24.94.163.33) from list of forwarders > - click OK |

You do not have any control over whether it supports recursion or not, but you do have control over whether you use it as a forwarder. Either contact your ISP to get a DNS server that supports recursion to use as a forwarder, use another DNS as a forwarder that supports recursion, or completely remove the forwarder and clear the check box on the forwarders tab "Do not use recursion for this domain" If you have disabled recursion on your server on the Advanced tab, it (your DNS)cannot be used as an Internet DNS resolver by your clients because it will only resolve names for which it owns in its zones. -- Best regards, Kevin D.
