I have an AD domain called mydomain.local . I want the users to access
an intranet application by typing in intranet.mydomain.com instead of
intranet.mydomian.local.

What do I need to create in DNS to accomplish this? I have never been
exposed to DNS until now.

Thanks in advance!

It looks like you messed up the typing on your
example names above so it will be difficult for
us to figure out what you wish to happen. (Just
adding an A record for intranet.mydomain.local
to the my domain.local zone would easily do what
you actually asked so we have to figure you meant
something else, more complicated....)

If you wanted to have the name in a different zone,
then you would add that zone too (as long as the
zone didn't belong to someone else.)

If the zone did belong to someone else you could
add a child zone for that specific name and then
a 'blank' A records (same as parent) to give that
one name its own (fake) zone.

Create a new forward lookup zone named intranet.mydomain.com, in that zone
create one new host, leave the name field blank, and give it the IP you want
intranet.mydomain.com to resolve to.
