I have a new client that is setting up a web/ftp server in a newly
established DMZ. Previously these sites were hosted, and DNS was set up, by NxTek. The ISP is Embarq (formerly Sprint). Domain registration was done through Network Solutions, who currently shows DNS as pointing to NxTek servers. In order to switch to the new web/ftp server I need to set up forwarding with Embarq to point traffic to our server, and then point Network Solutions to the Embarq servers. Am I right, or am I completely off track?? It's been forever since I've had to deal with this stuff. |

If I understand you correctly, the IP address of your client's web/ftp
server is changing. The authoritative DNS servers for the domain are not changing. Correct? If both the old web/ftp server and the new web/ftp server can be up and running at the same time, then you don't have a problem. You might want to ask NxTek to change the TTL for this A record to something short (like 5 minutes) so that the switch occurs quickly and nobody has cached records pointing to the old server. When you are ready to make the switch, just tell NxTek to change the IP address for this host. If you are saying that Embarq is taking over hosting authority for the domain from Network Solutions, then I would still ask NxTek to point to the new IP address as I described above. After this is working with the new IP address, you can change the domain hosting invisibly by having Embarq create a duplicate of the NxTek zonefile on their servers. When this is done, just change the authority with Network Solutions to point to the Embarq servers. Be sure to follow up with NxTek and have them remove the zone from their servers after you have verified that the domain is working with the new DNS authority.
