WPAD is apparently a host that is responsible for automatic configuration of
the browser. I have machines that are making DNS queries for a WPAD server, but they are doing this even when they are not logged in. Can someone explain to me what service(s) would be searching for a WPAD server on a Windows 2003 computer that is not logged in? -- Will |

Windows 2003 has a services named "WinHTTP Automatic Proxy Discovery", or something like that, that runs a proxy discover periodically. WPAD = Web Proxy Automatic Discovery, used to automatically configures Proxy in Internet Browser like Interner Explorer or Firefox. You can normally disable this service in Windows 2003. Yes, it does.
But, you can disable WinHTTP auto proxy discover. When this services is running the server looks for a proxy configuration in order to inform other applications what's the proxy configuration. If you disable this service each application it's responsible to find the proxy configuration when the applications runs. If you are not using proxy automatic configuration in your network, then you can disable this function in the server (Services.msc) and in the required applications, like Internet Explorer. In this way there will be no more WPAD packets in your LAN. Thanks very much. I just disabled it for the network from group policy. -- Will |

What service should we disable under Windows 2000 to prevent autodiscovery inquiries to WPAD? -- Will |

I disabled the Winhttp Auto Proxy Discovery service on Windows 2003 servers, and they still make DNS queries for WPAD. Any ideas on what other service(s) might be doing that? -- Will |
