Hello,
Im having a problem and im wondering if someone can me. In DHCP the icons of the computers have a pencil in it, it seems it means this: "Active lease, DNS dynamic update pending. This address is not available for lease by the DHCP server." Does someone knows how to fix this problem? I installed DHCP on another server and deinstalled it on the first...settings are all the same...im not using DNS Dynamic update credentials, i never used this and wondering if i have to now?...DHCP server is working for the rest 100% ok.. Also using vlans... Thx for the . |

Maybe it's an IP configured from the old DHCP server. Did you attempt to renew all your clients so they get an IP from the new DHCP server? As for VLANs, that depends on how you have it setup. When you run an ipconfig /all on the client, I assume it shows the new DHCP? Did you unauthorize the old one? Also, the only time I've seen a pencil is in third party DHCP servers. HOwever, if it is having difficulty updating into DNS, then it may be a red flag that the incorrect DNS servers are being referenced. This means in an AD environment, only the internal DNS servers are to be used. If it is pointing to an ISP's DNS or some other DNS (or even the Linkysys router) that is not accepting updates or doesn't host the zone, then we have a mis-configuration. Can you provide an unedited ipconfig /all of a machine in question and the DC please (assuming this is your DHCP server). - Thanks! Ace |

Assuming that updates are not working: 1. Any event log errors on the workstations or domain controller? 2 .Is the AD DNS domain a single label name? 3. Zone name match the AD DNS domain name? 4. Updates allowed on the zone? Keep in mind, whenever one of us in the groups ask questions or ask for configuration information from an installation, it s to view the actual config and eliminate the obvious. Your will us to you. Have you assigned a user account with a non-expiring password in the DHCP
scope properties for the DHCP server to authenticate with the DNS server? Or did you change that password recently? are you seeing errors in eventvwr. You can also run network monitor to check what is going on... -- I hope that the information above s you Good Luck Jorge Silva MCSA Systems Administrator "levd" <levd@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:E63D4FDE-169B-48B8-B20A-98F9DE2A4D8A@microsoft.com... > > > "Ace Fekay [MVP]" wrote: > >> In news:024332EE-D71F-45E5-9F10-37CA42333915@microsoft.com, >> levd <levd@discussions.microsoft.com> stated, which I commented on below: >> > Hello, >> > >> > Al clients have a new ip address from the new DHCP server. >> > The old DHCP server is not running anymore. >> > Vlans are configured correctly..... >> > ALso the clients are working correctly but i never seen this icon >> > with a pencil before....and i wonder why the dynamic dns update is >> > pending... >> > >> > Thx, >> > LEVD >> >> Did you confirm this (as Jorge asked as well)? Guys he's asking a simple question here, why are the DNS dynamic updates from the DHCP server sat on pending. There are 3 possible logical reasons and another instance I've found where this happens. The first is within Active Directory you have to make sure the DHCP server's account sits within the "DNSUpdateProxy" group. This is to ensure the DHCP server can update DNS even though it is not registering its own credentials as part of the secure DNS system. Check this group contains any DHCP servers within your Domain. The second reason is the DHCP server is not on your domain and its just sat in a workgroup. If this is the case add the machine to the domain, authorise it and then do the above step as well. The last logical reason is the scope on the DHCP server that the client is attached to needs to have the DNS options set to "Always dynamically update A and PTR records" every time a lease is created or experied. This is done by right clicking the actual scope, going to options and then the DNS tab. What I have found is even with everything up there alright the DHCP server will still have trouble registering DNS entries after it has dished out addresses and the entry will be sat on "pending" for seemingly no reason. It COULD be something to do with not registering clients that are not part of the domain such as foreign laptops, printers etc because my DHCP server seems to want to register 90% of these objects in DNS but then sit there and do nothing for the rest of the 10%. The problem is there doesnt seem to be any way of checking how long an object has been pending for, or how long its going to take for the DHCP server to get its ass in gear and actually complete the registration. There doesnt seem to be a way to force through a pending entry via a menu or any command either so I am usually left to force a DNS A entry via a domain controller and just hope the DHCP server is smart enough to remove this when the lease expires. I'm not microsoft qualified but I think my answer is somewhat more relevant to the issue this guy is having here... reading the question s. Hope this s levd. Ensure you have a reverse lookup zone for that DHCP scope.
