I have ran into a problem with my DNS server. Somehow something in the
configuration was changed. The network is a Windows 2003 Standard Server running a domain. Any of the systems that logon to the domain will be able to ping the server using just the hostname. However, any systems (i.e like our macs and laptops) that we do not log on to the domain are not able to ping the server with the hostname. To ping the server from one of these systems the entire FQDN must be typed in (or IP address). This was working fine several weeks ago, and for whatever reason it stopped. Any suggestions? |

This is really a MAC question, DNS servers don't resolve by host name only, the client appends suffixes from the DNS suffix search list, and sends it to DNS as a Full DNS name. -- Best regards, Kevin D. It not just the macs. Our laptops are XP Pro, we just don't use them to
connect to the domain. We have them connect to the network for internet access, but if they need to use the server then they would use the \\server1 on the run line. "Kevin D. You need WINS resolution, NetBIOS resolution, or the name of the zone in DNS that these hosts are found in the DNS suffix search list. On the Windows machines the ipconfig /all will display the DNS suffix search list, for MACs, you have to check the OS file to see how to configure a DNS suffix search list. Windows automatically places the Primary and Connection DNS suffixes in the DNS suffix search list. -- Best regards, Kevin D.
