I have a domain with an NT 4.0 server as PDC. I could not upgrade the NT 4.0
to W2K because of a driver issue, so I set up another PC as a NT 4.0 BDC, I upgraded it to PDC, and then I installed W2K Server on it with SP4. I had a problem with disjointed DNS, but now the new W2K DC is server08.ourdomain.org and the Domain is ourdomain.org in the Network Identification tab under System Properties. Another existing W2K server on the network has Full Computer Name: server04.ourdomain.org and Domain: ourdomain (there is no ..org). When I run DCPROMO on this server, I get the 5171 error. The HKEY Tcpip Parameters are the same for the two PC's, i.e. Domain and NV Domain is ourdomain.org and the Hostname and NV Hostname are server08 and server04 respectively. I don't know how to fix this. |

Cannot use the DCPromo.exe tool to promote Windows 2000 member servers after you upgrade the domain from Windows NT 4.0: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822704/en-us -- Best regards, Kevin D.
