Playing with DNS - had put a dns server on .4 and had set .3 to use
it. Then removed the zone (in prep to turn box into a domain controller to
test dynamic dns) and ran ipconfig/flushdns on both - and the .3 machine
STILL can resolve addresses !?!?

I don't get it .

Which zone did you remove? You should be able to continue to resolve
addresses for any zone listed on your dns server plus if there is a
forwarder it will be able to resolve any your primary doesn;t know about.
It doesn't appear you have provided enough info to wyou out.

Client side caching? (on .3)

..4 DNS server can still find ANOTHER DNS server for that
zone your removed from him?

NetBIOS is really doing the resolution? Broadcasts or using
a WINS Server?

nslookup, and testing with full name can figure out which it is.
(NSLookup doesn't use client side cache and full name won't
use the NetBIOS methods usually.)
