I've already got 2 DNS servers set up in a single domain environment,
but would like to set up a 3rd and then take it offline for backup purposes. The wizard only mentions setting up a secondary DNS server, not an "additional" DNS server as such. Will this affect my network in any way. |

How are the first two setup? Primary and secondary? If that is so then you
will need to make this server another secondary of your primary. If you have AD integrated dns then you should be able to make it an additional AD integrated dns server. -- Paul Bergson MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSi 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT http://www.pbbergs.com Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. <johnm_fisho@yahoo.com.au> wrote in message news:1157075183.228587.20320@74g2000cwt.googlegrou ps.com... > I've already got 2 DNS servers set up in a single domain environment, > but would like to set up a 3rd and then take it offline for backup > purposes. When you are talking about a single domain environment, are you talking about an Active Directory domain and adding a Domain Controller also as a DNS server? And the point of taking it offline for backup purposes, you have to keep in mind that on the 60th day the offline DC is tombstoned in Active Directory and while it may still work on its own, it will no longer replicate with the other DCs. (From its view, the other DCs will be tombstoned, too) DNS is the same way if it is a secondary DNS, once the expire time on the SOA record has been exceeded, the secondary zone will expire and the DNS server can no longer answer authoritatively for the domain. -- Best regards, Kevin D. My suggestion is to setup a W2K3 member server with DNS and just add
secondary zones of your main DNS servers. Since secondary zones are not AD-integrated, the DNS entries will be in a .dns file rather than in AD. Perform a zone transfer then take the 3rd DNS server offline. I have to wonder why you'd want an offline backup unless you're protecting yourself again someone modifying the DNS database. It would be better to leave a 3rd DNS server online and getting notifications from the primary zones when they change. Alternatively, you could make a backup copy of the .dns file.
