I know I can do this within the properties of a DNS server, but functionally,
can I disable recursion on a DNS server and then configure it with a forwarder and expect name resolution (external) to work? I thought that I'd seen where this cannot be done but I can't seem to find a clear answer, and I'm not 100% sure I understood the information I found. Thanks in advance for any advice. |

There are two different disable recursion settings. One is under the Advanced tab. That will kill all outside resolution other than zones it has on the machine. ISPs do this when they are hosting zones for their clients. The other setting is under the Forwarders tab. If you set a forwarder, and check the box on the bottom that says disable recursion, then it will resolve outside data only thru the use of the forwarders and will never use the Root hints. I think this is what you want. -- Ace Innovative IT Concepts, Inc Willow Grove, PA This posting is provided "AS-IS" with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights. Ace-
That's exactly the information I was looking for. I appreciate the clarification on this issue! I was aware of the different locations for recursion settings but wasn't what the consequences were of doing it one way or the other...Thanks!
