My network had a 2000 server setup as the only DC in the domain. I
have now installed a 2003 server as a DC. I have migrated the FMHC rolls to it and it is a GC. I am having some DNS issues, and I was hoping to get some to clean up my mistakes. I have not changed the ip address of the 2000 server. If I turn off DNS on the 2000 server my clients lose DNS. I have turned off DHCP and WINS on the 2000 server. All clients are getting DHCP from the 2003 server. The only ip handed out for DNS by the 2003 DHCP is the ip of the 2003 server. If I browse the network neighborhood on the clients I get some strange results. On some clients I go to entire network, domain and I get one machine which is a notebook computer that hasn't been joined to the domain properly. On other client stations I browse entire network and then domain and I see all of the members of the domain like I expect. An ipconfig on either type of machine shows the same information. On the machines that don't see all of the domain machines, I just search for any computer name and it pops up instantly and I can then browse that machine. On the 2003 server DNS I have no forwarders. Under the forward lookup zones there are two entries, one for the name of the 2003 server and one for the name of the local domain. Under the reverse lookup zones, there are two entries: one for the local network and one for a remote network connected by a VPN. The 2000 machine has problems and I need to get it out of my network. Why can't I turn off the DNS on it? What is the cause of the browsing problem on my clients. Thanks.
