Hello all.
Beginning yesterday, I have not been able to successfully open files in DW8 on my laptop. I use the Files menu, the one at the lower right corner of the screen below the CSS menu. When I click on the file, nothing happens. So I click again and I get an error message: Title: rundll32.exe Message content: The instruction at "0x7c910f29" referenced memory at "0x00000000", The memory could not be "read". Here's why I think it's my laptop: When I use the File menu at the top, left of the screen...DW8 opens every file I ask it to without fault. Data: I own (the last of this brand that I will ever own) a 2-year-old Dell XPS laptop (bought new, mind you). I have been warned by friends that the motherboards in this brand has a tendency to degrade. My friends are professionals who fix computers for a living. This isn't a rip on the manufacturer. I really need to know because this is going to necessitate buying a new machine at a time in which I can not afford to do so. Lately this machine has been doing funny things, but I need to know from the experts here if anyone knows the possible root of this problem. I use an external Seagate 160MB USB hard drive which has served me flawlessly for almost 2 years. So...is it my high-dollar laptop, Windows XP or some Freak Of Nature that is providing me with this nonsense? Please ... Many thanks!!! Sincerely, Wordman PS - Other than this, I have enjoyed a continued learning experience with web design and to date all my XHTML and CSS pass the W3C validator...which thrills me no end. |

They do have issues with motherboards on certain machines in the range (google 'XPS Motherboard'). For your next laptop, talk to your friends, or buy from the Dell D- series (different manufacturer, much better quality) Back to your issue; firstly, remove and replace the memory. If you still have the problem, run the Dell diagnostics and see if there is any issue with the hardware - especially test the memory chips. If you can find similar chips elsewhere (in a friends laptop, for instance) try those out as well. If it's the motherboard, then I hope you got a 3-year warranty on it - otherwise, it might be more cost effective to buy a new laptop. The price varies by model, though. Nothing in your message indicates that the external drive could be the problem - if it was only files on the external drive that wouldn'topen, I'd be more concerned about it. Note that problems with external drives are mostly related to blown USB drive controllers - the drive itself is usually fine. HTH, Pete. -- Peter Connolly http://www.kpdirection.com Utah |

Pete,
Thanks for confirming my suspicions. The reason I bought this laptop was because it was the only one at the time that had every feature I wanted. Previously I owned a Toshiba Satellite (and still do, and it still works fine, but slow) and was disappointed to find that Toshiba, sony and even HP did not have all the specs I needed at the time I ordered this Dell XPS. This is what drives me crazy about computers and software. I wil stick to my refrain, however and never own another Dell product. This lesson has been crippling and I will not suffer another. Will try your suggestions. Thank you for yoru kind and generous . On closing, anyone have a better laptop (or desktop) vendor to recommend? Thank you!!!!!!!!!! Sincerely, Wordman |

Norwich,
I used to like mine...until about a year after I bought it. I will never buy another Dell. this thing has proven to be too problematic. Wordman |

Well I still use an Apple Powerbook although I'll definitely be upgrading upon
the next OS release Snow Leopard even though it is supposed to be just performance enhancements. This is my second Apple laptop since I switched over shortly after the 10.0 release. I've never had a problem on this side. Whenever I have needed support, the Apple support has always been top notch. If I had to go to the Windows side, I'd have to say I've been impressed with HP as of late. I would probably buy that or a Dell as my second choice. Toshiba has gone downhill for awhile and while companies like Acer are growing (mostly due to acquisitions of Gateway/eMachines) I'm still not impressed with their overall quality. |
