In the same way as you can select a default browser for previewing, can you
also set a default media player for playing .wmv files on a website? I do not want to use Windows Media Player, but Corel WinDVD9 - the files have been set to open with WinDVD but when I test the site in Firefox browser windows media player tries to play the video (it also says that it can't play the file!!!). I do not have the option to list WinDVD as default player in Program Access and defaults panel of XP. I need to have this working this weekend so any would be greatly appreciated Thanks |

Playing media files is something that is set within the media player programs
themselves. For example, programs like WMP and Quicktime will try to be the default during their installation and they install both browser plug-ins and the player itself. If in the preferences of WinDVD there is no option to make it the default then it will not be able to act as the default. Also with a DVD player program you are typically playing back MPEG-2 content so I do not believe WMV will show us as a default. For further information you should contact Corel. |

Thank you for the replies. The Tools/Options/File types has .wmv checked.
I have given up trying to NOT use Windows Media Player but how do I solve the fact that the .wmv file is in the Dreamweaver Site, it is linked to a page when I preview the page Windows Media Player says: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. If the file is on another computer, verify that you are connected to the network. If you typed a path, verify that it is correct. If the problem persists, the server might not be available." The 'file' is both in it's own media library and it is in the site and linked?? What am i doing wrong? The site is only local it is not yet on the web, so no internet is needed and will be demonstrated at the weekend on the local machine only. The link works because it launches Windows Media Player to try and play the video!! !!! Thanks |

It sounds like Windows Media Player can't find it. Steve |

For some reason Windows Media Player can't see it, or doesn't recognise the file. You have probably done this, but if you open Windows Media Player and click on File | Open and then browse to the file, does it play? Steve |

Success!!!! I removed the ability for Windows Media Player to be used, and set
Realplayer as the default media player - tested it and it opened as it should and played fine. The problem was therefore not within DW or the link but with the Windows Media Player - am i surprised? Steve I really appreciate your efforts and suggestions to me with this. Many thanks. Judi |

Hi Judi, phew, glad you got it sorted! Once I had seen the simple link and you had confirmed the file worked and was in the right location, it could only be the player that was at fault. What fun ![]() Steve |
