I tried to put this site together fast, using tables, with a combination of
images and text and a bit of css....
The Nav at the left is unstable, how do I make less so? I want it to be in the
same position on every page -- surely this isn't that difficult for most
people...

Hello,

Also, the merged cells (the rowspans specifically) are what is causing the
menu to not align properly.
The menu aligns dependant on how tall the main content is.
This is because you've "connected" it to the main content by putting it in a
row that is merged with other rows on the "content" side.
You should use tables and nested tables, not merged cells.

Yes I noticed in your link sample that your tables are not valid. that may be
causing the headaches
