I have a new ups and it came with a software disc with the following
Unix software...AIX, Freebsd, HP, Linux, SCO, Solarus. Which one do I use and or Is there software on the Synaptic Package Manager that I should look for? Plus, <http://boinc.berkeley.edu/>Boinc has a new version and Synaptic (SPM) has not updated its version yet. Boinc has a linux version on there site and I have downloaded it but I have no idea how to install it. Any would be appreciated. Jonathan |

Details (like what brand and model UPS you have, and whether it has a serial or USB port) are *always* appreciated. Necessary, even. Anyway, looking at packages nut & apcupsd should get you started. - -- Ron Johnson, Jr. Jefferson LA USA "I'm not a vegetarian because I love animals, I'm a vegetarian because I hate vegetables!" unknown -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFHnVWNS9HxQb37XmcRAmgRAJkBarFWNDNzONxx5PSWQu J076AycgCgqA5r eihyDXRKvRlfXcJRjfJUmmA= =TpAA -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Lenny's GNOME has built-in support for my USB UPS (APC BackUPS) which just automagically works, so I no longer have to mess with nut (although nut would be useful for more complicated setups such as powering multiple computers off the same ups, or if your ups is not supported). I believe, though I am not sure, that the new ups support in gnome is part of the new acpi support. Regards, Daniel -- And that's my crabbing done for the day. If the UPS is really crappy so it won't work with standard tools, or really good so the accompanying software is too good to pass up, you can do the following: Pick the linux software and unpack it. Depending on how it's packaged that might be a challenge. Tell us what the file looks like if you need . Key words here are "shar" and "alien". When you've got the files unpacked, you'll most likely have some statically linked files that will run just fine on debian. Check the binaries (i.e non-scripts) with ldd to check that you have any necessary libaries in case it is NOT statically linked. If ldd does not list anything missing, you are good to go. If something is missing, you might need to install some extra packages. The names of the missing libs (possibly aided by google) will put you on track of which packages are needed. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
