Hi Folks,

I'm using the latest debian-testing-amd64-businesscard installer on an
Asus P5K motherboard with an ICH9 Southbridge and Marvell 88SE61xx SATA /
PATA chipset. I'm using an HP dvd1040i CDrom drive for installation.

The installer boots fine but cannot find any cdrom device to use. When I
look at dmesg, I get the following output relating to the ide devices:

So it looks like my 2 hard drives are showing up just fine, but I'm fairly
clueless as to why the kernel (2.6.21-2-amd64) isn't finding the CDrom
drive.

I've verified that the Marvell IDE/eSATA controller is enabled in the BIOS
as well (hence the initial booting of the installer CD).

I'm hoping someone on the list can point me in the right direction; if
this isn't the appropriate list then please accept my apologies for the
noise.

Its not noise. However, check out the installation manual. It tells
you how to submit an installation report via the BTS with email to
bugs.debian.org to the (I think) installation-reports psudo-package.

The 'maintainer' for the reports is the debian-boot team who write the
installer.

I would suggest that you subscribe to debian-boot, follow the
instructions in the manual and submit an installation report. Since
they know how the installer works, they can be of more specific .
They certainly were when I was in your shoes 8 months ago.

Are you able to put the sata controller into compatability mode? If you
are, you may want to try that out.

Are you able to put the sata controller into compatability mode? If you

Has anything more come of this? I have tried etch-custom with no joy.

Anyone? I have the same Mobo as the OP. Asus p5K SE. It boots from the dvd but fails to mount it saying no cdrom found. There doesn't appear to be a suitable device node when examining /dev from a terminal either.

(Same with Ubuntu Feisty FWIW)

You've tried two linux kernels. Does any other free OS work? What
about OpenBSD? Even if you don't want to switch to it, knowing if it
works could provide a clew to the kernel hackers.

Put the harddisk in another system
and copy your existing debian installation or install a new one via
deboostrap.
Then chroot into this installation, download & compile the linux kernel
v 2.6.22.6
with desired options (SATA AHCI..Attansic Gigabit Ethernet) install it,
also dont forget to install grub on the disk
and put it back into to the P5K SE system.

So with an recent kernel all features of the board work as expected

Unfortunately that is not really an option as I don't have another SATA
system or access to any Debian using freinds and colleagues.

I understand that by replacing the IDE DVD with a SATA drive it should work.
Sounds the easiest solution.

Although I dont't suppose any one out there can make a later kernel install
available as an ISO?

I forget: is the problem that you can't get debian installed or that
once installed it can't see the DVD?

If its just inability to get it installed, try using a USB stick per the
installation manual with hd-media. Once installed, if there's a kernel
module available, you should be able to access the DVD.
