Howdy List,
In doing some googling to get Debian setup on a Dell Inspiron 1501 I found some people had better success with the contrast/brightness function keys if they downgraded the bios to an older version. So, I tried this but Debian started hanging with an error message about "unexpected irq trap at vector XX". I then upgraded back to the bios version that came with the laptop, but the unexpected irq trap persists. To make matters worse, the Debian Etch installer hangs with the same error as well now (but different vector, if that means anything). Knoppix, however, still boots just fine. I have tried adding "noapic nolapic" to the boot options. That seems to the installer boot eventually, though it still pauses for a long time working on the error. Debian on the hard drive still will not boot though, because it can not get root mounted after the unexpected irq trap. Does anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions for how I can fix this? When I did a google search for "unexpected irq trap at vector", the hits suggests that this is ACPI related, not APIC ... So perhaps booting with "acpi=off" will make some headway? There are some other acpi-related parameters too you might want to play with... Hope this s -- Karl E. (end quote) Did you enter the BIOS setup and ensure that everything was set back the same as before? A BIOS update may 'update' the actual settings to some default state. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Yes, but since I never changed anything in the BIOS setup before installing Linux, I am not sure I would notice any changes. Good thought, but "acpi=off" did not make any (noticeable) difference. It still hung during boot with an unexpected irq trap. Also pulling pci bus cards off the machine and booting, then putting in one at a time to see if you can find the problem. I turned off everything the BIOS will let me turn off... USB, lan, wifi, modem, etc. and it still had the irq trap during boot. There are not really any "settings" it will let me tweak, as far as bus speeds or anything other than disabling peripherals, since this is a laptop. Anyone else have any suggestions? Even with all the options combined, it still hangs on an unexpected irq trap. Try booting with kernel parameter: noirqdebug
Also try the kernel paramater: debug (this should show what exactly is at irq vector XXX) Zach -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmaster@lists.debian.org |

Sorry I meant "noirq" is one kernel paramater and the other is "debug" :-)
