I can't use my ati radeon 9550 graphics card since I installed Etch. I
need the ati propriety drivers, because I need the tvout and a proper 3d acceleration; things the free driver cannot deliver. The problem is that after I install the fglrx drivers I cannot run various programs: totem, opera browser, the new ati catalyst tool (amdcccle), and possibly many more that I haven't tried. Totem crashes and shows a screen with 3 buttons, restart, close report bug but unfortunately no bug report is available, Opera and amdcccle say floating point exception. Today I installed sid to check whether that bug was solved but no luck. The only workable solution I have come to is when I need to browse the internet: use the free 'ati' drivers, when I need the tv-out/good 3d acceleration: switch to 'fglrx' but this requires at least one logout/restart of x and it's pretty irritating .. here's my latest fglrxinfo display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon 9550 / X1050 Series OpenGL version string: 2.0.6400 (8.35.5) The system is fully updated using kernel 2.6.18-k7 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". If I'm not mistaken, the 9550 is using a RV350 chipset and should be supported by the radeon driver in Xorg. I suggest you remove the fglrx drivers, and install Xorg from experimental. (As you're already running sid it shouldn't be much of a problem). -- Cheers, Sven Arvidsson http://www.whiz.se PGP Key ID 760BDD22 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQBGDBMvJ4SEkXYL3SIRAsbSAKCZRwkKTMgea0XHLavN3r vOK/O0JwCeLF21 Xe1fHXBVGBhCUwSxYVXWyXU= =GIGP -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

I agree with your point though, the radeon drivers may work well enough to accomplish the tasks requested. From his post, "Today I installed sid to check whether that bug was solved but no luck." At the moment, experimental is more of a waiting ground for packages not intended for etch, and anyway, installing a few carefully selected packages from experimental is not dangerous. I did recommend Xorg 7.2 (the one in experimental) because the radeon has seen quite a lot of development, especially for r300 (used for the rv350 cards also I think) and might have fixed whatever problems he had. -- Cheers, Sven Arvidsson http://www.whiz.se PGP Key ID 760BDD22 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQBGDB9JJ4SEkXYL3SIRAsc2AJ48bvrU8ASA7AgKg2yeAE WLUC/UdQCgmIF1 oxV/qAi7Ei1wdjO/FFkyBVY= =rzel -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

I missed that line. Sorry. As for experimental packages, you are also correct, but one must be careful which packages to install and it is something that is not for someone who is not familiar with the inner workings of the system because it can cause problems. For the record, I run Kernel 2.6.20.4 with KDE 3.5.6, in Sid, KDE being from experimental.
