Par défaut Debian GUI

Hi,
I have just installed debian 3.1, and have all the 14 cds. however, i do not know which one the GUI is on, and how to load the cds from the text interface for that matter. Can you me please?

Thanks

Toshko

I've never done a CD install, but I understand that the bulk of a
"standard end-user"-type of installation is on the first CD. So I
suspect you can, as root, simply type "aptitude install x-window-system
kde gnome" and get all the GUI-goodness you want.

Hi,
As a regular reader of Debian-user, I often wonder where people look on
the internet or the Debian website before they get the 14 cds and dont
know what to do next. I would really like to know where on the Debian
web site you found this information that did not provide enough
information for you to know what to do next. It would people in the
future if someone knew what webpage to change to make the information
clearer for new people.
Thanks!

It's been a while since I've used it, but I believe you want the
apt-cdrom package. It adds cds to your sources.list so that you
can install packages from the cds much like you would from a web
archive.

There are several good ways of building your system from the cds,
but since you're using a text interface, the older dselect method
of installing your packages will probably work the easiest.

Once you've loaded all the cds into your sources.list using the
command "apt-cdrom add" as root, then use "dselect" with apt as
the access method and start selecting the packages you want.

As I've said it's been a while since I used this method, so by
all means read the man pages for "apt-cdrom" and "dselect" before
you start.

Good Luck.
John

Once you add each cd to your source list using "apt-cdrom add" you do not have to think about which CD has what - the package manager will ask you for the correct CD. You will also be able to use 'apt-cache search' to find keywords in packages on all CDs after they're added.

Run 'base-config'. It has a text menu to read your CDs and the
possibility to install 'Desktop' type software.

Login as user root, run "tasksel" and choose "desktop". It will tell
you which CDs to insert.

Alternatively, do it all manually. Use apt-get or aptitude to install
"x-window-system", and one or more desktops - "gnome", "kde" and/or
"icewm". Then set up graphical login by installing "gdm".

(see

Good luck!
