When?
For the past seven months we've had under the "news" section at debian.org: "Upcoming Release of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0" Upcoming. Is this an off-beat sense of humour on the part of the developers? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? The reason I choose Debian over most other distributions (Especially Ubuntu) is because Debian has a strict release policy to ensure stability for server computers and deliver the awesome service that the "Stable" Debian releases have been known for as long as Debian's been out. Just because Etch isn't officially "released" it doesn't mean you can't use it. Just install Debian Testing from a testing iso which you can get from Debian's mainsite[0&1]. Etch is all in all pretty stable (I'm using it at the moment) but the packages are a wee bit outdated. Is this an off-beat sense of humour on the part of the developers? Considering how long it took Sarge to become stable... if it were release today... would make Sarge's release look glacially slow. Remember this is DEBIAN, not corporate-pushed releases that follow a rigid release time (read as Ubuntu) -- greg, greg@gregfolkert.net Novell's Directory Services is a competitive product to Microsoft's Active Directory in much the same way that the Saturn V is a competitive product to those dinky little model rockets that kids light off down at the playfield. -- Thane Walkup -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Its due out "any time now" with release likely I would guess in April. That is some time before Duke Nukem Forever comes out, so that should be good. Etch has been in freeze for a couple months now... and is coming along nicely. Etch is in full freeze (no new stuff will be added) and it will be released as soon as all RC bugs are done. Regards, Andrei -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. "Minor" packages that have RC bugs at release time will be dropped. I have been at this a long time & the drill is... cleanup as much as possible via bug squashing parties: freeze the distro: do more clean up: let a bunch of us who ar experienced get up the chops to migrate a few production systems over { this really get the bugs spotted}; do more clean up: release when us "testers" quit bitchin about the bugs. This release is about a year earlier than I expected & seems to be going VERY well. KUDOS to the developers..all of them! -- John W.
